“It’s such an honor to be a third generation Jewish Tar Heel. From the classroom to the basketball court, Jewish Tar Heels have left a fantastic impact on our university. I’m proud to embrace the Jewish Tar Heels spirit that my father (Class of ‘87) and grandfather (Class of ‘59) have identified with throughout their lives.”

Today’s ACC challenge post comes from a die-hard UNC sports and UNC Hillel fan. You’d be hard-pressed to find a game Alex hasn’t been to since he enrolled in 2010 and a year he hasn't donated to us since his first senior gift in 2014. Read Alex's quote below about why he gives back to UNC Hillel and join superfans like him in supporting our Jewish Tar Heels: https://bit.ly/3Cf64fY

“While on campus, Hillel was a pillar of my Carolina experience. Friday nights consisted of either a Carolina Athletics event or Shabbat dinner, and sometimes both! I fondly recall watching NCAA tournament victories over Villanova and Providence from the old Hillel Game Room. Even as an alumni, Hillel remains a cornerstone of Carolina. Every time I pass the building, I smile from the sidewalks of Cameron Avenue, with thoughts of 'home' running through my mind. Even better are the bonds built in those years at Hillel. Indeed, when I travel, in support of Carolina Athletics or otherwise, I often see friends that I first encountered through Hillel. I thank Hillel for enhancing my Carolina life, and I wish to ensure that the current Student Body has a similar experience. That's why I'm contributing to UNC Hillel and why I'm going to refresh the standings all day as we try to top Duke to win this ACC Championship.”

Thank you for supporting UNC Hillel during the first ever ACC Hillel Tournament. We are proud to announce we far surpassed our goal, raising $16,116 through 129 donors! All of the ACC Hillels came together to raise nearly $81,000 from 414 donors in under a week. Excitingly, we officially had the highest amount of donors in the campaign. We could not have done it without your incredible assist.

1. What is your role today in battling COVID-19?
I'm helping to battle COVID-19 as a bedside nurse at UNC's Cardiac Intensive Care Unit! I'm trying to ensure my patients with COVID-19 and their families feel c***ected and safely cared for during such a stressful and distanced time. Not allowing our patients to have visitors has been really tough. We've also been orienting several stepdown and floor nurses each day to the ICU as part of a preparedness plan in case of a large surge of COVID-19 patients, so lots of teaching! And being flexible with daily staffing and hospital wide changes. When I'm not at work, I do my part to practice social distancing, wear my mask when I'm out, and stay at home whenever possible!

2 How do your Jewish values influence your life today?
Almost all of my Judaism is centered around my community, so I've been worried about how my Jewish identity would change with social distancing. It was rocky at first, particularly celebrating Pesach away from family, but overall it's been an opportunity for me to develop my Jewish identity on a more intrapersonal level. I've reflected on what's important to me, what I want to go out of my way to observe on my own, and why. And aside from actually being able to develop a stronger sense of what my own Judaism looks like, I've made sure to keep my community close with scheduled Shabbat Zooms with friends, Shabbat phone calls with families, and celebrating holidays however I can! I made matzah ball soup this year from scratch for the first time and it turned out AMAZING!
