African American poets Nikky Finney and Jericho Brown are two incredibly influential authors who compose raw, honest, and beautiful poetry about their experiences as Blacks in a harsh, racist world.
I first met Nikky Finney (last picture) at a reading she hosted for her newest book, “Love Child’s Hotbed of Occasional Poetry” at UNC this past spring. Her presence and stories were even more powerful than her poetry. I am thankful I was able to learn from her.
Let’s continue to learn and advocate by reading.
I own a copy of both Finney’s “Love Child’s Hotbed of Occasional Poetry” and Brown’s Pulitzer Prize winning collection: “The Tradition”. No matter where you are in the country, DM us on Facebook and I will mail you either book of your choice to read. Once one person has read a book, I will mail it to whoever else wants to read it next. I will also be posting some of my favorite poems of theirs on our story next week.
