Both are important and serve very specific needs, but, there is a difference between a gym and a dojo.
You can (I do) put on my headphones and focus on building my physical self in a gym without much interaction between you and anyone else in a gym.
But a dojo environment requires a degree of trust, synchronicity, and “dialogue” between members to get the full spectrum of benefits from your time on the mat.
My time in the gym is “me” time but in the dojo it has to be “we” time.
The caliber of your training partners has such a profound effect on your development that it’s not entirely selfless to work hard to build them up and protect them, but it is absolutely essential.
