Ever feel so overwhelmed with emotion that you just want to roll on the floor and cry! Children do to!Teaching emotional regulation and tools to self regulate is a key aspect of Whole Child Learning Approach! -Children feel a range of emotions and will express and react to them without thinking. This range includes everything from joy to frustration to fear.
- In the first three years of life, children are working on building the foundation for this skill. They learn to take time to think, plan, and eventually come up with an appropriate response in situations in which they experience intense emotions. If these interactions go well, children build the capacity to regulate their emotions in appropriate ways, defined by their cultural and social contexts. -Emotional regulation is extremely important bevauae it influences how children interact with adults and each other, build empathy, master new skills, and work through frustrations and conflicts.
Holiday Sing Along! Performing in front of a crowd is daunting but it builds pride, confidence, learning to work as a team, working through challenges like feeling shy or nervousness and the sense of achievement at the end is priceless! Proud of everyone!
After twenty years in Early Childhood Education, I have realized that the one key concept that is magnanimously important and is often missed in Early childhood classrooms and home is EMOTIONAL REGULATION. How often have we told children “Calm down, take a break, Take a breather, etc” Have we ever taught them HOW? How can we expect them to ride a bike when we didn’t teach them how? 🤔 Recognizing emotions, what your body feels, breath work, self regulation and bringing yourself back to green zone is a skill we need to teach children early on, and practice daily. Meditation and yoga poses are great! Sharing a great tool that has helped our classroom! Ps: Great for Adults too - frame it and put it in your office or bedroom. Practicing Awareness has no age limit! 😉

Who knew a bunch of cups could bring so much joy!
Iam a firm believer in play based and experiential learning in kids. Children learn best when they are mentally active, engaged, social, and can make meaningful connections to their lives! We had a lesson in cows and farming. Milked Ms. Moo Moo and talked about all the things we eat that comes from a cow.
Sensory Exploration, “Calm Down Magic Jars”
Supplies:
Empty water bottle or plastic jars
Clear glue
Food coloring
Glitter
Hot glue gun/Gorilla Glue
Invite children to fill the jars with warm water. Add 2 Tbsp of clear glue. Let children add their choice of glitter. Add 2 drops of food color. The teacher can seal the lid with glue … real good!!! Once sealed and dry, shake shake shake. Now watch the glue dance and settle, it's magical.
Socio/Emotional Growth:
Calm down Bottles are a very powerful tool for sensory exploration, for all ages. It helps children recognize their feelings and manage them in an appropriate and safe manner. These help with impulse control and regulating emotions and encourage kids to self soothe, especially if they don’t have language skills to express. When a toddler is feeling angry, they can shake it and sit down with it in a quiet corner to calm down and watch the mesmerizing glitter dance. As the glitter settles down, their emotions settle too. To further engage the toddlers, I asked them to look for the stars and count them.
Physical Growth:
The shaking of the calm down bottle is a great activity to burn off energy , in a safe way. It develops gross motor skills and engages your biceps and triceps. You can also encourage kids to jump while shaking, to burn off energy and then sit down to watch it settle. It also develops eye-hand coordination and is a great physical outlet to release energy in a way that is less destructive than kicking, punching or pushing. While the child holds the bottle and watches glitter settle, their eyes and hands will be brought to the middle of the jar, which will help center the nervous system. The slow settling of the glitter, acts as a visual aide to slow their heart rate and breathing.
Try it…. It may help the moms too when they need a time out! 😉
Happy back to school and best wishes to all our friends that are starting school today!!
