1. What To Expect In The Job Hunt

You’ve applied. You’re close to having all your documents in hand (or maybe do have them all in hand). Now you are ready to start the Job Hunt. There are a few things that every applicant in this position should know:

- During this stage of the process, your file is viewable by our School Representatives (SRs) and schools in Korea. While viewing your file, they can see your basic information (name, age, country of citizenship and earliest start date), as well your picture and resume.

- Executive Recruiter Jenny Lee, SR– Jane Kim, and Scott Jeong

- Should a school be interested in you, they will request an interview – please schedule carefully, noting the time difference and be sure to keep your appointment. Interview times will always be listed in Korean time. Contact your TR and SR immediately if something keeps you from the interview.

- Normally, it will be the SR who will contact you directly (while cc’ing your TR) when they have a job idea.

- They will send you a general overview of the job description – city, basic working hrs, start date, and interview time/date. Certain information is consistent between different schools, such as free furnished housing, max working hrs, 50% medical, completion bonus, free flight to and from Korea, so these details may not be mentioned on the school info sent to you.

- Please “reply all” to all emails quickly. Confirm the best phone number for them to call you on, to make sure the SR has this info readily available. Even if you’re not interested in the job, please still reply quickly and let us know why. This job doesn’t work for you.

- Please answer all calls, even if the number comes up as “unavailable”, as they might be using Skype to make their call. Since things change so quickly, in rare cases our SR’s may need to call you directly before they have time to email and wait for a reply, when trying to set up an interview.

- While our SRs know that we at EZenglish work with a few different partners, we do not send out emails to more than one SR at a time.

- All correspondence should be sent to both your TR and SR for that particular job. Your TR serves as an advocate for you, making sure that you are being treated well and offered the best possible position for you.

- You will not likely have a multitude of offers coming at you. The job market in Korea is presently VERY competitive, and schools have the chance to be as picky as they want. While we don’t want you to blindly accept just any position, we are not able to market a picky teacher.

- Try to have your questions ready from the start – most can be answered by your Teacher Rep and those that can’t need to be brought up early on with your School Rep (with the guiJanece of your TR).

- Please review the Interview Tips on our website well before your interview.

- Interviews for North American teachers are almost always at 11am KST (which is evening time here).

- Interviews for European teachers are at around 3 or 4pm KST (which is early morning for European countries).

- Interviews for Australia and New Zealand will depend on when it works for the school, as they are pretty much in the same time zones.

- Following an interview, a job offer can follow very soon. Schools expect an answer within 24-48 hours, so please keep that in mind and make your decision as quickly as possible.

- The school will send a contract for you to look over. Please note that the exact details (name, start date and salary) might not jive with what you have discussed – that is normal. What will matter will be the job details sent by the SR or TR. This is just because an old contract is being sent out. If the start date isn’t the same as you expect, or too soon to seem possible, keep in mind these dates will always be just estimates since you must be done your E2 visa before you can leave for Korea. The schools know this. Please discuss any concerns you have about the contract with your TR and SR. The exact start date will be nailed down once your visa has begun processing.

- If you accept, you will need to sign the contract immediately, scan it and email it to your TR and SR.

- Your TR will then introduce you to the rest of the TEK team, including Jane who is our VR – Visa Rep, and helps all applicants during the important E2 visa process. We will also try and connect you with other TEK teachers in your new city, as well as have you connect to our company newsletter/blog, and Facebook group to hear about upcoming events.

- Packing tips, what to expect when you land in Korea, connection to teachers in your area all to follow.


***If any recruiter contacts you directly (Facebook name search or email directly) but doesn’t cc your TR on the email, or introduce themselves as a partner of EZenglish, they are not our partners. Please let us know if this ever happens. What can you do to help the process run smoothly?

1. Answer all calls on your phone, even the ones that come up as “unavailable” or as a strange number. Calling cards and Skype will produce strange numbers in caller id.

2. Please reply to any email from your TR or SR within 12 hours, even if to say that you need more time to think. Without knowing that you’ve received an email, we or the SR may move on to other applicants who are readily available.

3. If you have a Skype account, please let your TR know your user name.

4. Please let your TR know the best phone number for you to be contacted at for job interviews (landlines are preferable wherever possible).

5. Be honest with your TR about any other jobs you are pursuing, both at home and abroad. If you’re at all contemplating not going to Korea or accepting another offer, please do us the courtesy of letting us know immediately. There is nothing worse than us telling a school that a teacher who they are interested in is no longer available.

6. If you are not interested in a job offer sent your way, please still make sure you reply to the email, to let your TR and SR know the reasons why. This way the school is not left waiting, and it also gives us more info to narrow down our job search.

7. When you send your documents, please use a courier (with tracking number) ***Do NOT mail, not even air/priority mail! These are important, time sensitive documents. You will need to send the tracking number to your TR and SR along with the name of the courier company. Prepare Your Documents Now
Here is a detailed list of what you will need to send in your package to Korea, once your job is secured:
o The signed contract
o University degree – please make a photocopy of your degree, and have this copy apostilled. Do not send your original degree. o Sealed university transcripts (unopened) (please make sure you have at least 1 extra copy of transcripts as it will be needed for the next step)
o Copy of the Info Page in your Passport
o 4 color passport photos (2” x 2”)
o A Signed copy of your resume with correct address and contact information
o Criminal Record Check: Must be a federal level crc. Must be issued within the last 6 months
Must be notarized on the original criminal record check by Apostille
(Click here for more information) (Canadians must get their crc “verified” at the Korean Consulate in Canada)
o Medical Statement Form
Complete 'Health Statement' forms and send it to Korea. Once you arrive in Korea, visit a general hospital or community health center to obtain medical exam certificate to apply for Alien Registration at a local immigration office within 90 days of arrival. o Letters of reference – for public schools only – must be signed, dated, on school or company letterhead, less than 2 yrs old, 1 full page in length, written strongly in support of you as an applicant.

2. What happens after You accept a teaching contract

This is a very basic outline of the E2 process stages meant to help you understand what happens after you accept a teaching contract. (Dates are approximate as each Immigration Office and Korean Consulate has their own processing times.) Our visa representative will guide you through these steps, up until your arrival in Korea.
1..Send Contract: After you accept a job offer, you will be asked to send a scanned copy
of the signed contract to your Teacher Representative and School Representative.
2. Courier Documents: You will be asked to send all required documents to your school
in Korea by courier.
3. Immigration Screening: Your school will submit your documents to the local
Immigration Office in Korea for screening.
4. Receive E2 Confirmation Number: After approximately 5-10 business days, you will
receive an email with your E2 confirmation number.
5. Apply at Korean Consulate: Once you have the E2 number, you will be able to apply
for your E2 visa at the nearest Korean Consulate.
6. Visa Processing: The Korean Consulate will process your visa application and will
attach it in your passport. This takes on average 5-7 business days.
7. Flight arrangements: Once your visa is completed, flight arrangements and pick up
information will be arranged.


3. What to expect upon your arrival to Korea…

Chances are that you are very excited about this new adventure but also have a few apprehensions about what it will be like. Here are a few things to help prepare you for what is to come…


The Airport
- You will either be met by someone from your school (who will meet at a pre-determined location in the airport and likely be holding a sign with your name on it); or you will need to take an “Airport Limousine” (which is actually just a bus) to your city. There is a kiosk where you’ll need to buy your ticket and then you’ll need to find your bus stop – there are probably about 20 or so, so be sure to print off the name of the city you are going in Korean so that you end up in the right place. Someone from you school will meet you on the other end.
- You’ll likely need to change some money at the airport – be sure to have US dollars or Euros on hand to make the exchange easier. You might also want to bring an international bank card (check with your bank before you go to make sure that you’ll be able to use your card internationally).
- You will likely be approached by Taxi drivers eager to get you into their car to bring to wherever you need to go – just say “no thank you” and say you are meeting someone (to get them off your back)

Your Apartment
- You’ll likely be exhausted when you arrive, but don’t expect that you’ll arrive to a freshly made bed and flowers on the table. You might have a few stops along the way before you get to your apartment. You might be put up in a motel for a night or two or three (or more) until your apartment is ready. Some motels are a bit sketchy and are nicknamed “Love Motels” because they can be rented by the hour. Don’t be alarmed, they are also used for travelers and people in need of short term accommodations.
- When my friend and I arrived (after travelling for 24 hours), we were expected to go and look at 3 different apartments and choose the one we wanted (and then were taken to a restaurant to have “supper” with our boss and other employees of the hagwon). Needless to say, we did the best we could just to keep our eyes open.
- A couple friends of ours had to stay in a Love Motel for about a week until their place was ready… red lights and all! Food
- If you arrive later in the day, you might not get to pick up food until the next day, be sure to pack some snacks that could sustain you for a day or two or three. There are also plenty of corner stores in Korea where you can buy food and drinks if needed and they are normally open until about 10pm or so.
- Chances are that you’ll be shown where the nearest grocery store is, but you might need to ask specifically. Computers/Internet Access
- No matter when you arrive, you might want to email or connect with family and friends back home. The easiest way to do this initially will be at a PC Bang (PC Room).
- There are PC rooms almost on every street – just look for the sign that says “PC room” . For a small fee, you can use a computer there. They are smoky and loud, but will meet your need in that moment. Be sure to bring some Korean cash to pay for it. Arriving on a weekend
- If you arrive on the weekend (Friday night to Sunday evening), you’ll probably have to navigate the first few days on your own.
- Be sure to bring a few things to do in your leisure time and don’t panic or think that your school has deserted you. They will likely get you started on Monday. If you are feeling very concerned or confused, you can email Jane at EZenglish and he’ll either help you or give you the name/number of someone who can. Chances are that you’ll just have to wait out the weekend.
- If you need to contact us but do not have access to phone or internet, just find a PC room nearby

Phone/Internet/TV
- These services might not be connected upon your arrival but can normally be arranged through your school. Be polite and patient in requesting them. You will have to pay for these services.
- Cell phones can be purchased only after you have your Alien Registration Card. Medical Exam & Alien Registration Card (ARC)
- All foreigners living in Korea need to register with the Immigration Office. In order to get your ARC, you will need to get a medical exam. Your school will help you in arranging this. It should be done within a week or two of arriving, if possible.
- Having your ARC helps you to do such things as obtaining a cell phone and showing ID when needed.
- The medical exam is not a huge deal. They will ask you the same questions that we asked you in the application process and do a blood test to check for drugs or serious illness. If you have a medical concern that you are not sure about, just ask your Teacher Rep how you should handle that.

5. DRESS CODE IN CLASS


There is no real set standard for the dress code throughout the Korean peninsula as each school may have its own particular requirements for its teachers. In general, you must keep in mind that how you dress and present yourself dictates what people will think about you. The best advice that you can follow is to dress conservatively at work, much like you would at a semi-formal family dinner. For male teachers: collared shirts, dress shirts and sweaters with a nice pair of slacks would be ideal. Some schools may ask you to wear a tie; however, by no means are they required. For female teachers: collared blouses, dress blouses and sweaters with a pair of slacks or a nice long knee-length skirt would be the best. Mini-skirts, ripped or torn jean or t-shirts with offensive slogans, as with teachers in American schools, would be frowned upon and you would be sent home to change. Keep in mind that you are trying to dress in a manner which presents you as a serious teacher to your students and business directors. That being said, it may also be good to bring at least one business formal suit or outfit along to Korea, as you never know what occasions may pop up. The better prepared you are, the easier you will be able to dress appropriately for any situation. On a personal note:

To add to the question about appearance and dress code, I always suggest to teachers to overdress a little at first and make a good impression. Watch how other teachers dress in your school and get an idea as to what is appropriate or not in the first couple of weeks. From time to time, parents of students may be invited to the school for different events and at those times, you may need to dress up more to represent your school (and yourself) well. First impressions are very important in Korea and can stay with you for the time you remain at the school. You’ll notice that Korean teachers as a rule tend to dress very nice and take great care in their appearances. It is a little difficult to adjust, especially with the limits of packing your entire year’s wardrobe and necessities into 2 suitcases and most Westerners finding it very difficult to find clothes in Korea that fit them!!! Do not overstress it, but take your time and make sure you find a comfortable niche. You will be teaching children, so your comfort is also important. (How is that for a long-winded answer to a simple question?)



6. The Basics
There are the bare-bone facts... please do not stop your search here. Types of Schools
1) PUBLIC SCHOOL JOBS: EPIK does most of the hiring for public school jobs across Korea. They hire 2 times each yr, with start dates of late Feb and late Aug. Applicants must apply 4-6 months in advance. School hours: 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m., only 22 x 45min classes per week + 4 weeks of paid vacation. Rock-solid, government contract.
*As of Oct 1st, 2011, all public schools require TEFL, BA in English, Master’s, or B. Ed.
2) HOGWANS (Institute or Academy) – try and hire teachers to start in March/Aug. 30 teaching hrs each week, with 2 months of paid vacation. a. Kindergarten and elementary school – (About 10am to about 6pm), with you teaching no more than 30 hours each week. Teachers over 35 are not often hired to teach the younger kids in Korea. b. Elementary and middle school *– (Teaching hours: About 1 p.m. to around 9 p.m.). Most of your classes would be with elementary aged students.
*Middle school or high school. There are very few jobs teaching this age group in Korea. c. Adult, or university aged students – (Teaching hours: split shift, 7 to 11am, and 5 to 9 p.m. Contracts: always include free furnished housing, max of 30 teaching hrs/week, 50% medical, 2 weeks of paid vacation, free flight to and from Korea, completion bonus of 1 month’s salary. *Pension is only offered at 50% of schools, even though it’s Korean law. Cities
1) Rural or small cities - These cities are perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in everything Korean, or save lots of money. Always within 1 hr of a large/medium sized city.
2) Medium sized cities, and Seoul satellite cities – These major cities have between 600,000 and 3 million people. There will be lots of other westerners around, as well as countless restaurants, good movie theatres, western style bars frequented by all of the other English speaking community and cultural events to keep your schedules booked. Seoul or Busan within 1-2hrs.
3) Seoul or Busan – Huge, sprawling, fun and expensive. Since jobs are on such high demand, schools do their best to only hire swf’s. A good 2nd option would be the satellite cities around Seoul, which are still part of the Seoul subway system.

** We have had our best success with teachers living in the medium-sized, or satellite cities. They offer a really nice balance of lots of westerners around, and foreign-friendly entertainment, while still offering a Korean experience.
