August Land and Pond Management Calendar

Prepare Dove Fields: Begin prepping now for September hunting. Mowing, disking, burning and grazing can all be used depending on the crop.

Plant Fall Food Plots: Wheat, oats, rye, chicory, and turnips can all be planted starting late August.

Check Water Control Structures: Look for clogging from beaver damage. Designs for beaver exclusion devices are available from the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Clear Trees & Shrubs From Dams: Trees and shrubs should be removed from dams to prevent roots from causing leakage. Grasses help prevent surface erosion on dams and spillways.

Monitor Pond Water Haziness: Look for overly green water. If a white object is not visible at 12 inches, a fish kill is likely. Reduce chemical fertilizer or manure runoff into the pond where possible.
