Dyslexia is the most common learning disability

The inability to read has wide ranging consequences including a greater likelihood of involvement in the criminal justice system. Illiteracy and crime are closely related. Over 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level. The Department of Justice states, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure."

“We found that youth involved in a crime prevention program benefited from the same explicit PA, phonics, & word decoding instruction that benefits all individuals with reading disabilities. We also observed that in the communities served by this crime prevention program, about 50-60 percent of grade 2 students were already failing to meet grade level accuracy and fluency expectations -- If such explicit reading instruction had been in place earlier, in grades K - 3, these youth might not have been identified as at-risk for anti-social activities.
