This week our 5th graders worked on harvesting the last of the fruits and vegetables and cleaned out the grade level gardens.

Our Master Gardeners from the Junior Master Gardener Program were there to assist as the students got to work!

Coming soon: fresh jars of salsa for 5th grade from the produce they grew and a fresh batch of Stone Soup for 4th graders who took care of that particular garden last spring.

"As your new superintendent, I want parents and guardians to know that we should do as much as we can together to make school fun and meaningful for your student.

The research is clear that possibly the best thing students can do to increase their confidence, reduce anxiety, and improve their engagement in ANY class is to be an active reader. Reading anything fun each day is the best way to start.

Reading is weightlifting for the brain. It is a powerful activity that only requires a library card and books that are fun to read and easy to see lying around in your home.

You don’t need to start with the classics. Keep it fun and give it time. If your child hasn’t been a reader until now, that’s okay. Like many things, changing habits takes time. Small actions, taken each day, have a profound effect over time."

Mark your calendar! Our Adopt-A-Highway fall clean up is set for Saturday October 24th from 9-11 am.

We will meet at Northland Park and then work together to clean up our section of Winnetka.

Family representation is needed at Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) meetings for the upcoming school year from families with students of all age levels - including early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, and transition-aged students - with a full continuum of student disabilities. The focus of meetings is driven by parents' interests and resources that benefit all families of students served in special education.

👋 Join SEAC for its first meeting of the year this Thursday, Oct. 8 from 6-7 p.m. at the Educational Service Center in Anoka.

❓What it is: SEAC (pronounced “seek”) is comprised of parents/guardians of students in the district who receive Special Education services.

🩷 Why it matters: The intent of SEAC is to advise the school district on parent involvement, current issues, program development and established department priorities. The council serves as a resource and an advisory council for special education programs in the district.

Recently our 4th grade students were able to visit Mississippi Gateway Regional Park for a lesson on Landmarks & Landforms.

First off students learned the difference between these two topics. Then they toured the area pointing out examples of each.

Students were also able to observe how some landforms are created by using a stream table. Labeling those various landforms wrapped up the day's lesson.

Recently our 3rd graders visited Mississippi Gateway Regional Park to collect and study organisms from the river!

With the low water they had to trek across more rock than usual to reach the water.

Students had a great time getting such a close look at all these critters and used their presence to determine the health of our section of the river.

This week 4th graders had their first Junior Master Gardener Program lesson of the year!

Students learned about plant parts and their functions. They also collected several flower petals and leaves to press and use in a later project.

Some students also helped harvest our potato patch. We had a bumper crop for our first attempt!

Recently our 5th Graders had their first Junior Master Gardener Program lesson of the year!

Students learned various design aspects and how they can be applied to landscape design. They got a chance to practice sketching a design for the patch of lawn outside the main office.

Balance/Symmetry, line and texture were elements covered. These will come back during our winter container design lesson and will be applied to our hanging baskets and patio pots in the spring!
