American Sign Language & Deaf Culture Club - UIUC

The purpose of American Sign Language & Deaf Culture Club is to expose students of the UIUC community to the language and cultural norms of Deaf Americans.

American Sign Language is a non-Indo-European language that uses the visual mode instead of spoken. Club members will learn basic communicative skills in ASL, including the alphabet, numbers, basic vocabulary, and sentence structures. In addition to sign language, club members will also have opportunities to learn about the Deaf Community as its own cultural group, including Deaf cultural norms, beliefs, and values. Deaf films, artists, and poetry will also be examined.
