The OASIS Science team is embarking on a 5 week field expedition to a part of the seafloor that has never been explored before. Follow along!

Although the seafloor makes up ~70% of our planet only about 5% has been explored in detail. Over the next 6 weeks scientists from the University of Illinois, University of Florida, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U.S. Geologic Survey, Boise State, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and the National Science Foundation will be conducting an integrative field program along a chain of volcanoes

Alvin: Pioneer of the Deep | FULL EPISODE 06/30/2021

Join us TONIGHT, June 30th, at 8 pm EDT, for the world premiere of the CHANGING SEAS episode, Alvin: Pioneer of the Deep. Learn about Alvin’s past discoveries and how scientists will push the boundaries of our knowledge of the sea floor with the new upgrades to the iconic Alvin submarine. Many thanks to everyone involved in filming including the OASIS team - lots of our footage from 2016 is highlighted!

Study suggests ample warning of supervolcano eruptions 04/30/2018

Haley Cabaniss's excellent investigation of the effect of tectonic stress on "supervolcano" evolution and eruption triggering is out in GRL!! Congratulations Haley!!! :)

Study suggests ample warning of supervolcano eruptions Concern over the potential imminent eruptions of Earth’s supervolcanoes, like Taupo in New Zealand or Yellowstone in the United States, may be quelled by the results of a new study suggesting that geological signs pointing to a catastrophic eruption would be clear far in advance.

On Wednesday, March 7, at 11:30 AM Mountain Time, YVO will hold a first-ever question and answer session on Facebook Live!

Scientist-in-Charge Michael Poland, Deputy Scientist-in-Charge Wendy Stovall, and Chief Seismologist Jamie Farrell will talk about the latest earthquake swarm, past volcanic activity, current monitoring and research, and will be answering questions that are submitted via chat.

What do YOU want to know about Yellowstone? Post some questions below, and we will go live with the answers to those first. We plan on broadcasting for about 30 minutes.

If you can't attend live, video and a transcription of the session will be posted after the event.

The 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens opened the door to the modern age of volcano science.

Wait – eruptions, you say? There was more than one?

While most people are aware of the big eruption on May 18, 1980, the volcano continued to have smaller eruptions throughout that year. The big eruption, and the smaller eruptions of May 25, June 12, July 22, August 7, and October 16-18, 1980, all produced pyroclastic-flows and other depositional features.

USGS geologists were on the scene immediately following the eruptions to map Earth’s newest surfaces created by these deposits. The paper maps they published in 1990 are now available in a modern digital format for use in volcano research.

To read more about these maps and download the GIS data, visit “Database for geologic maps of pyroclastic-flow and related deposits of the 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens, Washington,” at https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ds1054.
