Department of Education Title VI Comprehensive National Resource Center in partnership with Indiana University East Asian Studies Center. CEAPS is one of the most vibrant interdisciplinary programs on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. CEAPS supports teaching and research on topics related to Asia Pacific across all disciplines, and works actively with all academic units and student groups to promote and enhance campus-wide understanding of Asia Pacific. CEAPS is home to two unique programs: the Freeman Fellow Program and Asian Educational Media Service. Established in 1996, Freeman Fellow Program has been funded by the Freeman Foundation to promote intellectual exchange with China by bringing to campus groups of young scholars in the humanities and social science scholars from partner universities that include Peking, Nanjing, Zhejiang, Wuhan and Fudan. AEMS disseminates knowledge of Asia on both the national and local level through film and media. A flourishing lectures series, faculty and student grants, a stream of visiting scholars from East Asia, a wide range of study groups to Asia, and a diverse program of K-16 outreach activities enable CEAPS to provide the campus and wider community with a wealth of resources for understanding the changing societies of the Asia Pacific region.

NCTA Day 3
Two large components our seminar are the hands on activities & campus field trips.

After our morning lectures, our educators were able to start on their Japanese woodblock inspired work with Ph.D art ed student Sam Shoppell. Then, Prof Naoko Gunji pulled several Japanese scrolls from the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, giving educators a chance to interact with them. In the evening we had our first movie night showing the Korean film “Ode to My Father” 🫶

A packed day! Yi Wen Chiang from University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) hosted a lunch for the educators to share about her Mandarin education & Taiwan outreach. Rachel Gu from the Ph.D art ed program taught about calligraphy using Chinese characters. Maureen Warren from Krannert Art Museum showed us amazing East Asian art from the KAM collection. We thank the wonderful educators who’ve come each day wanting to learn and share. 💙🧡
