In this year of the 250th anniversary of our nation, Dance at Illinois celebrates collaboration as the key concept of democracy. Paige Cunningham Caldarella creates a new work assisted by senior BFA student Cheyenne Smith and in partnership with the mighty first-year undergraduate students of Dance at Illinois. Second-year MFA candidate Hollis Bartlett reconstructs a work by his mentor, contemporary choreographer Doug Varone, and two groups of dance faculty; Sara Hook, Samuel Hanson & Roxane D’Orleans Juste, as well as Serouj Aprahamian, Rebecca Nettl-Fiol, Jacob Henss, Laura Chiaramonte & Anna Sapozhnikov combine forces and methodologies to unleash powerful premieres with designs by Illinois Theatre students.

Get ready to dance on your feet or in your seat with Cultura Pesá!💃🎉

Jomar Santos, founder of Cultura Pesá, discovered his passion for the cuatro, the 10-stringed national instrument of Puerto Rico, in high school and went on to perfect his technique and expand his musical knowledge at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He founded Cultura Pesá to connect young people to their cultural heritage, empowering a new generation of musicians to enjoy and share bomba, plena, salsa, seises, and aguinaldos musical styles with joy and passion.

*This performance is part of the campus-wide celebration, "Celebrating Latin America & the Caribbean," and is jointly sponsored by Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the Grainger International Student Community, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and La Casa Cultural House.

"The Summer Faculty Fellowship gave me the opportunity to develop ARCH 403 not simply as a new seminar, but as part of a larger question that has been emerging across my research, teaching, and practice: How might we teach architecture otherwise?" - Yazmín M. Crespo-Claudio (Architecture at Illinois)

Yazmín’s work points toward what she calls “archipelagic pedagogies”: approaches to teaching and knowledge-making that privilege relation over isolation, resist extractive forms of engagement, and recognize knowledge as situated and collective.

"My research is situated at the intersection of ballet, contemporary ballet, and modern dance as both artistic practice and a site of deep movement investigation—not to uphold these forms uncritically, but to understand better, challenge, and innovate from within them." - Paige Cunningham Caldarella

Through choreographic research on Merce Cunningham’s "Summerspace," Paige's project explores how historical dance practices can serve as departure points for contemporary artistic inquiry. Rather than treating Cunningham’s legacy as fixed, the research asks how it might be revisited, challenged, and reimagined through contemporary ballet and embodied practice.
