This August, Illinois’ Governor Pritzker signed a new law extending the age of protection from 18 years old to 21 years old for immigrants eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. This is amazing news for youth immigrants in the state of Illinois! Check our page next week for more information on the new extension. 🗽

In a deeply disappointing press release today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that new international students will not be granted visas if they enroll in a fully online course load. The move serves no practical purpose and will harm many students and universities.

We have been concerned and disappointed to see the Trump administration's announcement regarding the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). ICE announced international students taking a fully online course load due to the Covid-19 pandemic will not be granted F-1 or M-1 visas. International students, therefore, must choose between leaving the country or endangering their health. International students with pre-existing health conditions that make them more vulnerable to Covid-19 and caregivers of elderly relatives will be disproportionately affected.
The University of Illinois Immigration Law Society stands in solidarity with international students and against the ICE's inhumane policy. One thing everyone can do to help is to sign the petition below.
