The Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies promotes teaching and research about Brazil by faculty and students at Illinois and their Brazilian counterparts

Established in January of 2009 and officially inaugurated in October of 2009, the mission of the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies is to promote study and research about Brazil by faculty and students at Illinois and their Brazilian counterparts, who take advantage of the extensive resources available at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

The Lemann Center celebrates Professor Flávia Andrade on receiving two major research
grants—both of which she leads as Principal Investigator:
• Living Arrangements, Inflammation, and Mortality Among Older Adults in Brazil (National Institute on Aging)
• Quantifying Unmet Need for Social Care Among Older Persons Globally, with Special Attention to the WHO Region of the Americas (World Health Organization)

Dr. Andrade’s research has also been featured in top journals, including the American Journal of
Epidemiology, BMC Oral Health, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN, BMC Public Health, and the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition

At 5 pm, today, November 20, in the Lucy Ellis Lounge, the Portuguese Program will screen the Brazilian film Vitória, made possible through the generosity of the directors and the Mostra Brazilian Film Festival in Chicago.
Inspired by a true story, the film follows Nina (Fernanda Montenegro), an elderly woman who secretly records drug dealers from her apartment window to fight crime in her neighborhood. After months of filming, she teams up with journalist Flávio Godoy (Alan Rocha) to expose the case, risking her safety as she refuses witness protection and continues her pursuit of justice. FREE ADMISSION.

Dr. Paiva-Neto’s research centers around Community Health Workers and public health systems in Brazil and across the globe. Congratulations, Dr. Paiva-Neto!
