Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that the graphite in an average pencil can write a line about 35 miles long?

That's roughly the length of 130 football fields.

It's pretty amazing to think about how much writing is packed into one little pencil. Proof that great things can come in small packages!

Fun Fact Friday!

📚 One of the world's oldest surviving literary works is thousands of years old!

The Epic of Gilgamesh dates back more than 4,000 years (around 2100 BCE) and tells the story of a legendary king and his adventures. It was written on clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia, a historical region of West Asia.

From clay tablets to paperbacks to audiobooks, storytelling has been helping people learn, imagine, and connect for thousands of years.

This amazingly creative student designed his own board game! We play during break as a way to refresh and relax before diving back in. It’s a game with super fun house rules - every time one of us lands on a question mark the other gets to ask a trivia question. Animal trivia questions are the most popular theme so far!

Playing games is a great way to learn. This student figured out pretty quickly that there are a lot of words that rhyme with sit, and stacked them up high! Tutors at Scholars adapt games like UpWords to each student’s skill level.

Learning sight words doesn’t have to be boring! Combining sight words with the game of Memory makes for a fun way to start at Scholars. This student loves playing a few games in a row to warm up, and we practice making fun and serious sentences using these new words.

Pop with Blends is one of those games that students of all ages want to play at Scholars! Often they even want to play during break time when we’ve been planning to play as part of our learning. To play, spin the spinner and then think of 1, 2, or 3 words that start with the blend pulled out of the box. To make it more challenging, you can do things like think of words using the blend followed by the long a sound, or maybe the short u. It’s a great way to build vocabulary! This is also a fun opportunity for our students to practice playing together and taking turns.
