Penn State Extension is a community-based educational resource. We have educators in many Ag-related fields. Visit extension.psu.edu for more information.

All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation’s more than 100 landgrant colleges and universities have a third critical mission -extension. “Extension” means “reaching out,” and, along with teaching and research, land-grant institutions such as Penn State “extend” their resources, solving public needs with college or university resources through non-formal, non-credit programs.

Too wet to plant?

Over the past couple of weeks, some areas of the state have been receiving significant rainfall. Planting into saturated soils can cause sidewall smearing, rutting, and deep soil compaction.

Compacted soils:
🌱reduce pore space
🌱limit exchange of gases - causing an increase in the likelihood of aeration-related problems
🌱restrict water infiltration
making crops more vulnerable to stress later in the year.

An extra day or two of patience can help protect soil structure and preserve long-term productivity.

Did you know?
The compaction created in one wet planting season can impact productivity for years 😳

Healthy soils are one of the best investments we can make for resilient cropping systems in Pennsylvania.
