Our 116th year is just around the corner!

08/06/2026

That’s a wrap on this year's Gunston Summer College Institute! 🎓✨Building on six years of helping our seniors launch their college application process with confidence, this three-day program (formerly the College Application Workshop) was a fantastic success. Over the course of the institute, rising seniors worked directly with 9 college admissions professionals representing:
• University of Maryland • University of Tennessee, Knoxville • Wake Forest University • Williams College • College of Charleston • The George Washington University • St. John's College • UMBC • University of Denver

A massive thank you to our incredible visiting admissions team for sharing their time and insight, and to our students for their hard work and focus all week long. They are heading into senior year ahead of the curve and ready to tackle the application journey! Want to learn more about the college process at Gunston? Next stop: Stanford & Georgia Tech! 🎓
Huge congratulations to 2022 Gunston Co-Valedictorians Abbey and Maggie Miller, who just graduated with high honors from two of the nation’s top engineering institutions and are already locked in for world-class graduate programs this fall.

🚀 Abbey graduated from Carnegie Mellon University (Mechanical Engineering) and is heading to Stanford University for her Master’s in Aeronautics and Astronautics to design plane, rocket, and jet engines! (Fun fact: She was the mechanical tech lead for CMU’s first-year NASA Lunabotics team.)

🧁 Maggie graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) and is heading to Georgia Tech for her Master’s in Computational Science and Engineering. On top of an Ivy League degree and an Ocean Spray internship, she ran a successful business baking 100+ custom cakes!

No final exams? Yes, please! 🎓✨While the rest of school was hitting the books for final exams, the Gunston Class of 2026 chose a completely different path for their final week before graduation: diving headfirst into the real world. Through our Senior Internship Program, these students traded their desks for operating rooms, law offices, boat decks, and retail storefronts. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the amazing feedback we received from their mentors! Shoutout to just a few of our hard-working seniors:

🐟 Sydney Kim planted oysters and monitored water quality with ShoreRivers
🦴 Ethan Harper watched total knee and hip replacements first-hand in the operating room
🐾 Wren Weingaertner discovered a newfound love for cats while supporting Queen Anne’s County Animal Services.
🎨 Aurora Baughman brought her eye for design to The Market at Dover Station creating a stunning vintage holiday display.
💼 Van Topjian expanded his entrepreneurial horizons at The Market at Dover Station
🚓 Sydney Wilson went behind the scenes with the Talbot County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit.
✏️ Layla Kent wowed her supervisors at the Kent School, Inc. by crushing a week’s worth of tasks in record time.

🎓Today we celebrated the school's 115th commencement with a beautiful waterfront ceremony overlooking the Corsica River! The 52-member Class of 2026 earned acceptance to 151 colleges and universities and amassed approximately $14.5 million in college scholarships. 🌟

Commencement speaker Betsy McCown, P’11 (Associate and Managing Director of the Echo Hill Outdoor School) reminded our graduates:

"The importance of nurturing the mind continues to be a vital part of life going forward. As a class, you are endeavoring to study everything from aeronautics, biology, engineering, ecology, education, cosmetology, forensic science, music, psychology, occupational therapy, to public health, and many more. Your intellectual futures are boundless. It is healthy to be a lifelong learner."

The Class of 2026 has many academic accomplishments to celebrate, including four Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Additionally, Gunston joined the top 7% of schools nationally to be awarded AP Platinum Honors from the College Board this year. Building on this academic momentum, the graduating class achieved a spectacular college admissions profile, securing placements across 25 states and two foreign countries at elite institutions such as Cornell and Williams, flagship “Public Ivies,” and highly specialized programs in STEM, the arts, and the maritime sector. 🛶⚓️✈️

Congratulations, Class of 2026! We can't wait to see how you change the world.
