My heart is incredibly heavy as our entire FCPS community is processing yesterday’s three separate traffic accidents involving our students riding bicycles or scooters. One of these incidents tragically resulted in the death of one of our middle school student.I cannot imagine the loss their family and loved ones are coping with.

My deepest condolences and prayers go to the student’s family, friends, teachers, and loved ones. Please know that the entire FCPS community is here to support you. The school-based mental health team and crisis counselors are currently available for students who need additional support processing their grief or just need to talk. For our middle and high school families, Hazel Health teletherapy can connect you confidentially to a licensed therapist, and is available at no cost to you.

Today we are reminded of the fragility of our children but also the close connection which exists across our communities. As we travel through our neighborhoods and school zones, please slow down, stay alert, and look out for one another. Whether driving, walking, or riding, choosing patience and extra care is a small, vital way we can help keep our students safe and protect the lives of those we love.

Please take care of yourselves and each other today. We are in this together.

Responsible budgeting begins with honesty, transparency, and early planning.

As Budget Chair, I believe our community deserves to understand the financial realities facing FCPS before decisions are made—not after. That is why Budget Vice Chair Ilryong Moon, Fairfax County School Board, At-Large Member and I began these conversations early, giving the School Board, staff, employees, families, and community time to understand the challenges and participate meaningfully in the FY28 budget process.

The figures presented during our work session were hypothetical examples designed to illustrate the scale of different budget choices. They were not proposed cuts, final recommendations, or decisions already made. Sharing the financial impact of an option does not mean the Board has chosen that option.

I appreciate my colleagues Sandy Anderson, Fairfax County School Board, Springfield and Tom Dannan, Fairfax County School Board Member for recognizing the importance of beginning this work thoughtfully and transparently. As Sandy noted, confronting the realities now allows us to prepare rather than react. Tom also emphasized that starting early provides the time needed for careful consideration and attention to detail.

Our responsibility is to protect classroom instruction, support competitive compensation for our educators and staff, honor our collective-bargaining commitments, and make decisions that remain financially sustainable.

There will be difficult conversations ahead, but responsible leadership means presenting the facts clearly, listening to our community, and working collaboratively toward solutions—not creating unnecessary fear before any decisions have been made.

I remain committed to leading this process with transparency, discipline, and a steadfast focus on our students and employees.

My heart is with the injured staff member and the entire Westwood Hills Elementary community. I am grateful no children were physically harmed and thankful to the school staff and first responders who acted quickly.

Every student and educator deserves to feel safe at school.

A great turnout last night for Centreville High School’s Senior Parent Night and back-to-school night. 🩵 🖤

School spirit was in high gear as parents walked the schedules of their students, snacked on cookies and treats from the SGA Bake Sale, and gathered information on the wonderful resources available to families and organizations in the Centreville community. I’m pleased to share that crossing guard services have been temporarily reinstated at the following schools:

• Edison
• South Lakes
• West Springfield
• Centreville
• West Potomac
• McLean
• Oakton
• Chantilly

Thank you to everyone in our community who spoke up and remained engaged as we work to protect safe routes for our students.

There is still more work ahead. I will continue working with my School Board colleagues and our partners on the Board of Supervisors to explore every available option to protect the safety of our students.

Day 2 of the school year and the back to school energy is amazing! 📚🍎

I caught up with Dr. Reid at Powell Elementary Tuesday morning and it was inspiring to see the students already engaged with their teachers and classmates! After a warm welcome by Ms. Han and a wonderful group of 6th graders, we then went on a tour to see what students were already up to. The Powell Pumas did not disappoint!

We saw first graders learning to write their ABCs, brand new Algebra workbooks already on the desks, groups of students smiling and chatting as they collaborated on getting-to-know you assignments, and the newest Pumas learning the ins and outs of school. The excitement and positive energy was wonderful!!

Many thanks to the amazing teachers and staff at Powell Elementary! Your energy and positivity is catching! I wish you all a wonderful school year full of joy, success, and inspiration! 💙
