Happy Faculty Friday! Meet Joe Costello, who is starting his first year at AFA as our PE teacher. Mr. Costello has a background in teaching Theology as well as coaching swimming. “Mathematics is the language in which we express the abstract natural laws that God has used to create and hold together the universe as we see it.” -Mrs. Smith
Mrs. Smith’s Algebra II class puzzled through an interesting scenario with a Rubik’s cube. Students imagined that the cube was covered in paint, then broken apart into individual pieces. They used pattern recognition to write mathematical expressions assessing how many faces of each small cube would have paint on it. Students built formulas from patterns they observed, then generalized them from specific to universal. This skill of generalizing is a foundational concept that will be applied throughout the year in math and beyond.

📖Today was our first Chapel of the new school year and we enjoyed this weekly opportunity to worship and spend time in Scripture. Both Lower and Upper Campus students sang hymns and heard a message on the definition and pursuit of virtue. After Chapel, our older Falcons broke into House discussion groups to talk about what they learned in the service. It was wonderful to be in fellowship again!

🙌We love having these smiling faces back on campus! It was a great first week as our young Falcons settled into their classrooms and our older students started off with team building and House events at Retreat. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year ahead!

📣Happy Faculty Friday! Meet Anne Simpson, who is entering her 7th year at AFA. Mrs. Simpson is our K-12 music teacher as well as the Choir club director. One of her favorite classroom moments is hearing her students harmonize for the first time and their reactions of joy in making music together. She is especially looking forward to increasing her role in the Upper Campus this year, focusing on deeper studies of music literacy and theory. We’re so glad you’re on Team AFA, Mrs. Simpson!
