Virginia will limit social media use for children under 16 to one hour per day beginning Jan. 1, 2026, unless parents provide verifiable consent for more time.

The law, signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin in early 2025, requires platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube to verify users’ ages, enforce time limits, and use collected data only for age verification.

Supporters say the measure will help address youth mental health and reduce excessive screen time, even as lawmakers acknowledge enforcement challenges. Some parents have welcomed the change after discovering how much time their children spend online.

The law is already facing a legal challenge from NetChoice, a tech industry group representing companies such as Meta and Google, which argues the restrictions violate free speech rights and parental authority.

Violations could result in fines under Virginia’s consumer protection laws.
