📚 Have you ever read the story “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”?
If you have, you know that it’s a story of a mouse who is given a cookie and that event sets off a series of other other requests that all leads back to the initial event.

🫧When children are given the freedom to explore their world; a series of events like that easily occur. Today, that exact thing happened.

Now, most days are like this because adults set materials up and the children take the lead in how they use them.

🖍️If you give a toddler a piece of chalk, they’ll need a surface to make marks on.
🖍️When they are making marks, they’ll probably ask for a friend to join.
🖍️When one friend comes over, another friend (or 4) will probably come join them.
🖍️Then the surface might get too crowded, so they’ll need something else to write on.
🖍️They’ll find a new surface together, then begin to tell stories about their drawings.
🖍️When their drawing grows, they’ll need more colors.
🖍️And on and on…until they need a new surface to make marks on. 😊

To experience math at Christine’s Early Learning Center is as easy as observing our children engaging in their play.

Children are natural mathematicians.
They push and pull toys, sort materials, stack all sorts of items and fill and empty cups of water in the mud kitchen. All of these activities allow young children to experience math concepts as they experiment with spatial awareness, measurement, and problem solving.
Weaving math into all areas of the curriculum will enhance children’s play experiences. They come into situations where real problem solving has to occur. They own their learning this way.

-Will all of the pine cones fit in this bowl, or do I need the bigger one?
-When I pour my milk, I need to fill half of my cup.
-Does my stick fit in the small side of the container with holes or will I need to use the larger side?
-How many containers do I need to fill the whole trailer with sand?

We want to use these situations to help our children use their high thinking brains. The classrooms, teachers, and math related materials/loose parts all contribute to authentic learning experiences.
