Common Core Corner……
As Central Square enters the fourth year of working with the Common Core State Standards, we thought a refresher on what they actually were would be a nice way to start the New Year for our entire community.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed as a way to better prepare our children for what the future holds for them; whether it be attending college, serving our country or going into the workforce. These standards are not a curriculum but a set of learning skills that our students should achieve. They set the guidelines for what students should learn from year to year in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.

English Language Arts/Literacy:
Balance of non-fiction (not real) & fiction (real)
Learn about the world by reading
Read more challenging material closely
Talk about reading using details from the reading
Include the details from the reading in writing pieces
Increase academic vocabulary

Mathematics:
Learn more about fewer key topics
Build on skills within and across grades
Develop speed and accuracy with calculations
Really know the material and be able to apply it
Use the skills in real world situations
Think fast and solve problems

As you can see, the Shifts listed above are the skills that our teachers are using every day to ensure your children are as prepared as possible for the next step, whatever that may be. Teachers realize that every child learns differently and at different rates, which is why these are merely guidelines. Rest assured that we are all striving to provide your children with the best possible education so they can ‘be whatever they want to be’!
Happy New Year!
