🚗 Watch the car in front of the car in front of you.

You’ve probably been behind this driver: they ride the bumper ahead of them, then suddenly slam on the brakes… speed back up… and do it all over again.

Don’t let their bad following distance become your problem.

If the driver ahead is braking hard and unpredictably, increase your following distance. Give yourself enough space that you can brake gradually instead of being forced into their pattern of sudden stops.

And when possible, look beyond their vehicle at the traffic farther ahead. You may see brake lights, congestion, or a changing light before they react.

You can’t control how the person in front of you drives.

But you CAN make sure their bad habits don’t cause you to rear-end them.

More space = more time to react.

🚗 Don’t Drive in a Pack.

Ever notice cars on the interstate traveling side-by-side… mile after mile?

It may feel harmless, but it takes away one of the most important things you can have when something goes wrong:

An escape route.

If the vehicle beside you suddenly swerves, a tire blows, debris appears in your lane, or traffic stops ahead, you need somewhere to go.

A safer habit:

• Avoid matching another vehicle’s speed for long periods
• Either pass safely or create some space
• Leave yourself room in front, behind and beside you whenever possible
• Pay extra attention around large trucks

Good drivers don’t just watch what’s happening.

They leave themselves somewhere to go when the unexpected happens.

That little bit of space could make all the difference.

🚗 Someone’s Passing You? Don’t Make It a Race.

It happens—you’re driving along and another vehicle starts to pass.

Your job? Stay predictable.

Don’t speed up.
Don’t drift toward them.
Don’t suddenly change your pace because your competitive side woke up. 😅

Maintain a steady speed and give the other driver room to safely complete the pass. If conditions allow, easing off the accelerator slightly can help them get back into the lane sooner.

Remember: being passed isn’t personal. You don’t win anything by keeping someone beside you longer than necessary.

Let them go.

A safe driver isn’t worried about being first—they’re worried about getting there safely. 🚘

One mistake drivers make at railroad crossings is following traffic across without first making sure there’s enough room for their entire vehicle on the other side.

If traffic suddenly stops, you could find yourself sitting on the tracks with nowhere to go.

Your rule should be simple:

Never enter the tracks until you can see enough open space on the other side for your whole vehicle.

Even if the light is green.
Even if everyone else is moving.
Even if the driver behind you is impatient.

A few extra seconds is always worth it.

🚗 Waiting to turn left? Keep those wheels STRAIGHT.

You’re sitting at an intersection, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear. You already know you’re turning left, so you turn the steering wheel and get ready to go.

Seems harmless.

But if your wheels are already turned and another vehicle hits you from behind, the impact can push your car directly into oncoming traffic.

Instead, keep your wheels pointed straight ahead while you wait.

Once traffic is clear and it’s safe to make your turn, then turn your wheels and go.

It’s a tiny driving habit that can make a huge difference in a crash.

🚗✋ Being polite can accidentally cause a crash.

You stop to let a car pull out and give them the friendly little wave…

“Go ahead!”

But here’s the problem:

You can only control YOUR lane.

The driver you waved through may not be able to see a vehicle approaching in the lane beside you—and that approaching driver may have no idea someone is about to cross in front of them.

This is sometimes called the “wave-through” crash.

Instead of directing another driver into traffic, simply leave space and let them decide when it’s safe to go.

Sometimes the safest thing you can do behind the wheel is not be the traffic director.

🚦 GREEN DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN GO.

You’re approaching an intersection and the light has been green for a while.

That’s called a “stale green light.”

It doesn’t mean slam on your brakes or start slowing down unnecessarily. It means pay attention and be prepared for it to change.

As you approach:

👀 Watch the light AND the traffic around you.
🚗 Maintain a safe following distance.
🛑 Know whether you can safely stop if the light changes.
⚠️ Never speed up just because you’re afraid of “missing” the green.

Good drivers don’t just react to what’s happening.

They anticipate what could happen next.

🚗 An animal runs into the road. Your first instinct may be to SWERVE.

But that split-second reaction can create an even bigger danger.

Swerving suddenly could send you into:

• Oncoming traffic
• Another vehicle beside you
• A ditch, tree, pole, or guardrail
• A pedestrian or cyclist you didn’t see

If an animal enters your path, brake firmly while maintaining control of your vehicle. Only steer around it if you know you have a clear, safe escape path.

It’s a hard instinct to fight—we naturally want to avoid hitting an animal.

But one sudden swerve can turn a scary moment into a serious crash.

Brake. Stay in control. Know what’s around you before you move.

🚗 That green light doesn’t mean “GO!” It means “make sure it’s safe to go.”

When your light turns green, take one quick second to look left and right before entering the intersection.

Red-light runners, distracted drivers, and vehicles trying to beat a yellow can still be coming through.

That one-second check could prevent a serious crash.
