I spent too many years in my teaching not keeping notes on each lesson with each student.. if I could go back and give my younger teaching self one piece of advice, it would be to start doing this! My system isn’t the most advanced 😂 but keeping notes is truly so helpful to student progression, staying on track, being personable (remembering things about your students lives and audition schedules), and remembering the breakthroughs in every lesson and how you got there so you can keep repeating them. If any teachers out there are reading this, here’s you cue, it will deeply change the quality of your lessons. ❤️

Keep in mind many of my students are beginner/intermediate level, that’s where I’m coming from with this. If this is you though, hopefully this helps! Repeatedly in the studio lately I’ve broken down simples riffs students have been struggling with in their songs and within 60-90 seconds of showing them what the notes are and the timing of them they’ve got these riffs down no problem. Sometimes it has to be a mental switch from thinking it’s something you’re not capable of to realizing it’s just a few notes grouped together! Other artists voices, timing, and vibrato can often make a simple 3-4 note riff seem much harder than it really is.. plunking it out on the piano can help remind your brain there’s less going on than what it sounds like!

At IVACON this year I talked with a handful of other teachers about how to do Riffs & Runs, how to teach them, how to bring more soulfulness into the voice and I’ll be honest… I just didn’t know! It’s something I learned very intuitively and spent so much of my time obsessing about as a kid. I’ve gone on a bit of a deep dive these last weeks into these topics and I’m feeling pretty dang inspired to throw a class together on this subject as I think I have some perspective/tools/exercises that can help! I’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in this as well as what you’d like to see/topics you’d like covered in the class! Let me know below if you’ve got thoughts ⬇️

Think your tone deaf? It might not be your ability to hear pitch that’s the problem.
