During the month of March, the AWARE Youth Councils of Hickman County were tasked with spreading awareness and breaking the stigma for self-harm awareness month.
At East Hickman Middle School, the AYC worked diligently to research information regarding self-harm and helpful resources for those who may need it. In addition to this, some students researched and tested apps that may be useful in ways of providing evidence-based coping skills (such as journaling, charting mood, breathing exercises, etc), where to reach out for help, and celebrating recovery from self-harm. When this part of the project was complete, the AYC brainstormed ways to promote this information.
Although the national day for self-harm awareness is March 1, the AYC wanted to have a school-wide day dedicated to sharing this information to their peer group as a way to show our support locally. We communicated this idea with our EHMS administration and were honored to have the opportunity to host and participate in our "Wear Orange Day" for Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
We are so excited and so proud of the work these incredible students have put into creating this event! The day went by fast, so we were unable to catch some sweet pics of the students that participated, but were able to get one after school hours of our amazing staff that also showed an outpouring of support!
Thank you to everyone who who participated and made today possible! We couldn't have done this without that support and the engagement of our community!
