Our 6th-grade leaders kicked off their final weeks at LOLMS with a 3-day journey to Frost Valley. Joined by a special alumnus, they headed upstate to immerse themselves in the woods, hiking, rock climbing, and embracing the kind of connection and growth that only time in nature can offer.

This trip marked more than just an adventure; it was a meaningful transition. A time to bond, reflect, and celebrate their journey as students, while beginning to step into their next role as alumni.

After months of study, both Lower Elementary classrooms came together to share their work on Africa. Students presented the books they created, reflecting the depth of their research and engagement. The classroom environment told the story as well, with artwork, music, and traditional foods, thoughtfully brought together with the support of our Community Association. Experiences like this bring learning beyond the classroom, fostering connection, cultural awareness, and a shared sense of community.

Our Lower Elementary students have been deeply engaged in their study of Africa this year, and this work has continued to unfold in the art studio. After exploring the incredible variety of butterflies found across the continent, students selected one to study more closely and used it as inspiration for their own large-scale, symmetrical designs. Through this work, they are not only observing the beauty and diversity of the natural world but also refining their understanding of balance, pattern, and form.

Working with the Montessori grammar materials, these children are composing sentences and selecting symbols to represent each part of speech. Through this work, language is made visible, with each word holding a role, each symbol carrying meaning.

The process is slow and intentional: writing, choosing, placing, revisiting. It is a quiet deepening of understanding through hands-on experience.

In Early Childhood, mathematical understanding is built through purposeful, hands-on work. With the Spindle Box, children count each spindle with intention, matching quantity to symbol and experiencing what zero truly means, an empty space. Through repetition and concentration, they are constructing a deep, internalized understanding of numbers.

On their way to class, a few Lower Elementary students noticed something out of place along the shoreline. The oyster nursery had shifted after a recent squall. Together, we retrieved the cage, checked the bags, and rescued the juvenile oysters we could find. Along the way, we discovered clear signs that our reef is growing and taking hold. An unplanned moment became meaningful work, rooted in curiosity, responsibility, and care for the living world around us.
