Community Music School

Community Music School Non-profit arts organization that provides instrument/voice lessons, ensembles, and music classes.

Dedicated faculty (all with music degrees) offer private, group or ensemble instruction to nearly 600 students from over twenty-five towns throughout the Connecticut Valley-Shore area. Our 6,000-square-foot facility in Centerbrook houses 17 studios. In addition to private lessons, the school also offers a comprehensive program of classes, workshops, summer camps, and ensembles for all ages! We are

Congratulations to our 2026-2027 Greenleaf Music Award winners Karis Torneo (voice), Mylo Awwa (piano), and Olivia Li (violin)! In partnership with the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, the award is merit-based, providing 50% tuition toward a year of lessons at CMS and honors the memory of Carolyn Greenleaf, a resident of Essex who was passionate about music education and who worked tirelessly to promote music in our communities.

New Horizons Band at Community Music School welcomes adult musicians who miss making music with others.

Twinkle Together is a fun, welcoming beginning violin class for children ages 6–9 with no prior experience required. Through music games, movement, and playing together, students learn the fundamentals of violin while developing focus, teamwork, and a lifelong love of music.

🎵 Music has the power to inspire, build confidence, and change lives, and every student deserves the opportunity to experience it.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, community partners, and supporters, Community Music School is proud to offer need-based financial aid for students of all ages and ability levels, from preschoolers to adults.

If financial circumstances have been holding you or your child back from music lessons, ensembles, or group classes, we encourage you to apply. Financial aid is available for private lessons and most group classes and ensembles.

Don't let finances stand in the way of a lifelong love of music. We're here to help make music education accessible for every family.

There's something magical about making music together.

For many young musicians, joining an orchestra is the moment everything clicks. Listening, leading, encouraging one another, and creating something far greater than they could alone, it builds confidence that extends well beyond the music room.

Community Music School's Junior String Orchestra is the perfect next step for developing violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists who are ready to grow in a fun, supportive ensemble.

Students strengthen their musicianship while making new friends, performing engaging repertoire, and experiencing the joy of playing together.
