✏️ More POW-eRful Writing in 3rd Grade!
Writing a narrative text from a prompt can feel intimidating, but our 3rd graders have a process: POWeR💥💪
Here is how they tackle writing:
P (Plan):
P1 Pre-read for the gist (supports comprehension)
P2 Pull apart the prompt into "Do" & "What"
P3 Pick ideas!
O (Organize): Structure thoughts using
CSPACE (Characters, Setting, Problem, Actions, Conclusion, Emotion).
W (Write): Write with confidence and positive self-talk!
eR (Revise & Edit): Revise their ideas first, then edit for mechanics (that's why the 'e' is lowercase!).

Literacy detectives at work!

Erwin Intermediate educators explored the story behind their ACAP data during a “Literacy Investigation.” Using the 5 Whys protocol, they examined possible root causes and discussed instructional next steps to support students’ literacy needs.
The investigation also connected the science of reading’s Four-Part Processing Model for Word Recognition—sounds, spelling, meaning, and context—to instruction. Educators explored the alignment between the General Phonics Lesson Plan and CKLA Skills lessons to strengthen classroom practice.
Our district education specialists, Kim Gray and Carol Managan, joined us to show their continued support for literacy instruction and student success.

I appreciate the opportunity to shadow JEFCOED district reading specialists as they modeled the LETRS new word routine using a CKLA Knowledge lesson . Through visuals, student-friendly definitions, gestures, and opportunities to use new words, they demonstrated how these strategies support all learners, including our English learners. This allows us to speak the same language when supporting schools. What a valuable day of learning and collaboration!

Thank you, Mrs. Austin, for teaching me all about the word “parched” through explicit vocabulary instruction! 📚✨

This intentional routine gives students multiple opportunities to hear, say, understand, and use a new word before encountering it in the text. By the time students begin reading, parched isn’t an unfamiliar word—it’s a word they already know and understand! 💡👏

That’s how we set students up for comprehension before the reading even begins!

🔤 Alphabet Boot Camp is Making an Impact!

As Round 1 of Alphabet Boot Camp comes to a close, I can’t wait to see how much progress our students have made with alphabet knowledge!

At Fultondale ES, our Kindergarten teachers didn’t hesitate—they jumped right in! 💙🧡 They even introduced centers to give students multiple opportunities to practice, apply, and strengthen their learning throughout the day.

Now comes one of my favorite parts—looking at the data, celebrating growth, and determining what our students need next! 📈✨

📚🧺 Pinson Elementary celebrated Literacy Lunch today!
A gym full of parents listened attentively as the Local Reading Specialist shared information from Alabama Literacy Act: For Families and Communities. Families brought lunches, tents, and chairs to enjoy lunch together before participating in hands-on learning activities and games!

I was so excited to experience Mrs. McGoldrick launch Partner Reading with her 1st graders on Monday! 📚

Her instruction was so explicit, and she was SUPER pumped—which made her students super pumped, too! She has a thoughtful rollout plan that will eventually lead students into Paragraph Shrinking.

I can’t wait to watch their progress! Partner Reading builds confidence, fluency, oral language, comprehension, and so much more—all while giving students meaningful opportunities to learn with and from one another! 💙📖💚
