Mrs. Schafer's fifth graders used their listening skills to play a game called "Boom, Clap, Swipe." Next, they collaborated during CKLA to understand different perspectives. Students enjoyed using whiteboards to write down different points of view from multiple scenarios. Writing and then sharing out with their group helped strengthen their communication skills.

Law and Law Enforcement student began a unit on the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution with a focus on illegal search and seizure. As part of the unit, students learned about traffic stops and how the concepts they discuss in the classroom apply to real-world situations. Last week, students took their knowledge to the back parking lot of the high school where they learned the proper procedures for conducting a traffic stop. Students practiced how to safely pull a vehicle over, approach the vehicle, interact with the driver, and even write their first traffic citations.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Shannon McBrady visited the Academy Explorer 8 class to discuss professionalism. She guided students through an activity focused on professional email communication, sharing examples of both effective and ineffective emails, and discussing what makes an email appropriate for a professional setting. Dr. McBrady led a discussions about what they could include on a résumé at their age. She challenged students to think beyond traditional work experience and recognize the many skills, experiences, and accomplishments they already have. She presented students with two different résumés and facilitated a discussion about the strengths and areas for improvement of each. Students then began to create their own résumés, identifying potential experiences, skills, and accomplishments to include. Finally, Dr. McBrady led an activity where students were presented with various scenarios and moved to either the “Problem” or “Professional” side of the room based on how they would respond. The activity provided students with an engaging way to apply the concepts of professionalism they had discussed throughout the lesson.

Congratulations to Heaven Bajoka and Jaclyn Kupraszewicz for obtaining their MiYDA (Michigan Youth Development Associate) Certificates! The MiYDA Certificate and Credential are offered as a part of the Educational Careers program in the HHS Academy. The students worked very hard to achieve this goal, as this certificate requires not only course work but also 120 hours of in-class time with their students as well as 120 hours of out-of-school time with school-aged students.

The seventh grade Academy Explorer classes welcomed Officer Valdes to speak about the importance of knowing and following laws and how that connects to growing into responsible citizens. His presentation discussed how each branch of the government creates and enforces laws in society. Officer Valdes’s shared his career path and information about programs at the high school including EMT, EMS, Law Enforcement, 9-1-1 Dispatch, and Firefighting. &JusticePathway
