This month Rooted Academy will study one BIG question: Where does our food actually come from?
Last week students explored foods that come from plants and animals, husked corn, learned about the life cycle of apples, and harvested food straight from our garden. Our nature study took us into the woods, where each group searched for the largest tree on campus. Students measured trees and learned how a tree’s mature size can give us clues when trying to identify what type of tree it is. We also explored the 5 “F”s of farming, learned more about Minnesota agriculture, and practiced financial literacy skills through farm-themed activities involving money, counting, and decision-making. We want kids to understand that food doesn’t begin at the grocery store. Knowing where it comes from builds appreciation and connection to the farmers, land, work, and resources behind what ends up on our plates. Such a great start to our Farm to Fork month!

“Autumn reminds us that every ending holds the beginning of something new.” 🍂🌱

Our Little Wild Roots students are embracing October and all the beautiful changes happening around us! This week, we slowed down to notice the changing season and explored the wonderful world of seeds. The children discovered how plants create seeds, where those seeds can be found, and how we can gather and save them now to plant when spring returns. 🌻

There is something so special about helping children understand the rhythms of nature: observe, gather, save, wait, plant, grow. 🌱

🍂 Wild Seedlings had a fantastic week saying our September farewells and welcoming October. We are grateful to learn among the season, to notice its changes, follow its rhythms, and experience the natural world as part of our days. To learn this way together is a gift. 🤎

Last week at Rooted Academy was all about creating, noticing, and building real-life skills.
We kicked off our first Workshop session and the kids did a fantastic job using real tools to create something that is functional and beautiful! Students measured, marked, sanded, drilled, and assembled their own plant presses using tools like tape measures, rulers, sanders, drills, clamps, and more. These opportunities to build confidence, independence, perseverance, and practical life skills. Students also gathered natural materials and used them to create their own nature-inspired art, turning leaves, flowers, grasses, and other little treasures into something completely their own. They also collected a variety of plants to preserve in the plant presses they built. And, of course, part of exploring the natural world is knowing how to do it safely! Students worked on plant identification, learning that the plants growing around us can be helpful OR harmful and why knowing the difference matters.
Such a full, enriching week of learning at Rooted Academy and exactly the kind of learning we love! 🌱
