Marine Trades Institute prepares students for rewarding careers in the marine industry.

Marine Trades Institute, located in the beautiful Les Cheneaux Islands of northern Michigan, offers two 12-month programs focused on marine industry careers: Comprehensive Career Boat Building and Marine Service Technology.

Join us in congratulating the Class of 2026 and welcoming them into the alumni family! What an amazing day it was to gather with family and friends as we look back on all the growth and experiences that have come this past year.

Special congratulations to our two students who were recognized with awards for their dedication to going above and beyond during their training. The Shipmate of the Year Award, which was voted on by staff and classmates, was awarded to Samuel Kramer (MST) and Miles Carlson (CCBB). Miles was also a recipient of the Mertaugh Family Craftsmanship Award, which recognizes a student who demonstrates the same skills, craftsmanship, and commitment to the craft as local superior marine craftsmen Jim, Tom, and Dan Mertaugh.

Cheers to a new group of students taking their talent out into the industry!

Our Marine Service Technology students had a great time on the water, heading out in several of the boats they worked on and serviced throughout the year.

It was a great opportunity to see their skills and hard work in action while enjoying some well-earned time on the water with their classmates!

After months of hard work, careful craftsmanship, and hands-on learning, the big moment finally arrived! Our Comprehensive Career Boat Building students launched the Indian River Skiffs they built and put them to the test with a row around Cedarville Bay.

Make your weekend one full of boats! Marine Trades Institute will be offering tours this weekend, Saturday, August 8th, from 11 am - 3 pm. Stop by the school during your trip to the Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show and see where our students spend their days working and learning.
