Happy Labor Day. This day recognizes the historical victories during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, a time when 12-hour workdays and unsafe conditions led workers to organize unions. On June 28, 1894: President Grover Cleveland signed an act making Labor Day a federal holiday.

Although not a part of the Union Labor movement Jane Addams in 1907, was a founding member of the National Child Labor Committee, which played a significant role in passage of a Federal Child Labor Law in 1916.

Laura Jane Addams was born September 6th, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. Her parents were John Huy Addams and Sarah Weber Addams. Her father was wealthy miller, local politician, Civil War officer, friend to Abraham Lincoln, and long time state senator. Her mother died when she was young and she was at first raised by her older sister and then by her step mother Anna Hostetter Addams.

Addams a progressive social reformer and peace activist received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.

J H Barkau was born on September 3, 1909, son of Henry and Minnie (Leh-de) Barkau. He married Esther Hohlt Aug. 3, 1934. They had one daughter, Mrs. John (Judy) Jackowski, four sons, Wayne, Floyd, John and James. In addition to starting up Barkau Automotive (which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary next year) John was also the President of the Village of Cedarville. John passed away on 12/02/1977.

Viola Lied was born Sept. 3. 1870, to Benjamin and Malinda Lied. She was married to Henry Frank, March 29, 1887. They had two daughters. Mrs. Ray Folgate of Orangeville, Mrs. Grover Shippy of Ridott and one son Le Roy of Dakota:Viola passed away in January 1955
