The 2022 Magazine of Mount Mercy University is out NOW!

With the year coming to an end, we wanted to reflect on what our students, employees, alumni, and larger community have accomplished over the last year. Use this to dive into what the last year has looked like here on the Hill!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Twelve Days of Filly on the Hilly. We (or, more, Filly) drew our grand prize winner and of all the entries, Autumn’s name was pulled. She is now the proud owner of a mug, blanket and her own mini Filly who she can take on adventures.

We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Filly is grateful for everyone who was so concerned for her well-being and ensured that she was brought back safely to us.

Each day from now until December 9th, we will be posting a clue on Filly's Instagram (filly.on.the.mmu.hilly) to help you locate Filly somewhere in our building. The first person to find her and bring her back to the desk receives a small prize. Every subsequent person to find her hiding spot in the library will be entered into the drawing for the grand prize which includes a cozy blanket, mug, and your very own mini Filly.

So break out your handy dandy notebooks and good luck future detectives!

On Tuesday, November 15, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Travis Lacy will give a lecture titled "Scrolling is Unpaid Labor" as part of MMU's fall faculty series of lectures. The lecture will be given at 6 PM in Flaherty Community Room (204 Basile Hall), and is free and open to the public. The lecture description is below.

"In this talk, we’ll look at how the common ways that we use the internet (and social media in particular) are actually a form of self-exploitation. We think we are simply killing time or relaxing when we scroll through our social media feeds, but what we are actually doing is a kind of unpaid labor. By considering the ways that social media companies, advertisers, marketers, and others use algorithms to divert our attention and maximize views, we can see that some of our most regular technological habits are not conducive to our own freedom and autonomy. And if that's the case, what would it mean to use technology freely, as those who actually use it rather than be used by it? This talk will consider these questions and propose a few possible answers."
