Harrison at Madison Elementary School

one-room Hull School was opened to students, with Miss Belle Byers as the teacher. Within two years, the Board purchased the site at the corner of K Avenue and 6th Street NW and erected a single wooden building. These temporary quarters were soon filled to capacity, making it necessary for the Board to build a permanent school. In March 1885, a bond issue for $10,000 was passed and a new school was soon constructed on the same site. The new building, which housed students from kindergarten through eighth grades, became known as Harrison School. It was named after the ninth president of the United States, William Henry Harrison. Tragedy struck in January 1929 when a fire of unknown origin destroyed the school. The Board of Education made plans for a new and better Harrison School, and construction of the new building began in the fall of 1929. The new Harrison School – named for Benjamin Harrison, twenty-third president of the United Sates and the grandson of William Henry Harrison – was opened to students in September 1930.
