In 2021, Aegon Asset Management approached Prairie High School with a pilot program for a national curriculum, Invest In Girls (IIG). With the goal of ushering in the first generation of financially literate girls and increasing the number of women working in finance, Prairie said ‘yes’.
“Any time a community partner sponsors such opportunities, we want to make sure our students are active participants,” said Mary Gudenkauf, Prairie High School Career Services Advisor. Teachers nominated students based on an interest in finance. Emily Phelps, Aegon USA Tactical Portfolio Manager in Client Investment Solutions, presented 12 sessions with topics focused on financial foundations so students feelconfident about money matters.
On May 26th, Prairie students toured Aegon’s corporate office.

Prairie High School Students Explore Skilled Trades
On April 29th Future Builders of Iowa invited 1,700 high school students from area schools to Build My Future. Hosted by the local home builders associations at Hawkeye Downs, this event provided high school students an opportunity to learn about the construction industry through an interactive showcase. Industry partners featured hands-on activities for career exploration, including educational displays, equipment operations, and learning labs.
Students were engaged in learning labs for carpentry, electrical, masonry, welding and many more skilled-trades careers. Through these experiences they not only learned about the craft behind a wide range of trades they also engaged in conversations with experts about what kind of training is needed, wages, working conditions/typical day, and opportunities within the industry.
