The Washington community is heartbroken to share the loss of one of our beloved teachers, Sophie Pionek.
For the past four years, Sophie served in our Social Studies Department, leaving an extraordinary impact on our students, staff, and school community. Her passing is far too soon and completely unexpected, and our hearts are with everyone who knew and loved her.
Sophie's heart was fully devoted to serving students. She worked tirelessly to help every student grow, believing deeply in their potential and encouraging them to become the very best versions of themselves. She was also a wonderful colleague who celebrated the successes of others, supported our shared goals, and genuinely cared for the people and families around her.
A beloved teacher, coach, sponsor, leadership advocate, and friend, Sophie invested herself wholeheartedly in growing people well. She was an exceptional AP World History teacher whose expertise earned her selection as a College Board AP Reader.
As advisor of our Academic Decathlon team, she led students to the state competition and coached them to earn more than a dozen individual medals during her time at Washington. Through Amnesty International, she inspired students to raise awareness and funds in support of political prisoners around the world. She also helped organize Jamnesty, Washington's annual garage band competition, giving students a creative outlet to use music as a force for awareness, advocacy, and positive change.
Sophie embodied what it means to be a Warrior. Despite her brief time at WHS, her passion, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others have left a legacy that will continue to shape Washington High School for years to come.
She was a Warrior through and through, and we will miss her beyond words.
Please keep Sophie's family, friends, students, and all who were touched by her life in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
💙❤️ Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior

The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is thrilled to formally announce the Youth Leadership for Five Seasons (LFS) Class of 2027!
Each year, 35 students from 8 metro-area high schools are selected to step outside the classroom one Wednesday a month during their junior year to explore careers, connect with peers, and hear from local leaders while learning about the history, industries, and challenges of our region.
Huge thanks to the school counselors who support this program and to our sponsors: Hills Bank (Presenting Sponsor), Collins Aerospace (Supporting Sponsor) and Big Grove Brewery (Catering Sponsor).
