The number of people who say to me that we’ll never have more doctors if we don’t force kids through public school makes my head spin.
First of all- if public school prepared all people to be doctors, we wouldn’t have a shortage of medical staff right now. 😂
Secondly- people who choose the medical profession do so because they are GENUINELY INTERESTED IN IT. That wouldn’t change because they were homeschooled or unschooled. In fact, because those kids would have the freedom to learn about what they wanted, they’d likely be able to learn even more even sooner, FUELING that passion!
If you’re fascinated by unschooling, but afraid that your kids won’t be prepared for a rich future, please revisit this question and what your fear is rooted in.
Unschooled children know that they can learn whatever they want throughout their lives, and that they have no limits to their abilities. Knowledge is accessible and limitless and passionate! Not only are they capable of diving very deep into their passions, but they often know so many cool things because learning is FUN, not a chore to please adults.
Now, the truth here, is that this is natural for kids. They are born curious and will stay that way if allowed to. The hurdle of this kind of living and learning is YOU - the adult. Your beliefs about learning and fears about your child’s future are what’s holding them back. Start working now to deschool yourself and change those beliefs!
