Each year from September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated to recognize the culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

"Mexican Roots" was constructed by students to portray Mexican American culture and how people represent their heritage through dress. The color palette - mainly red, white, and green - tied the display together and simultaneously emphasized the background.

Mannequins were donned with ensembles showcasing elements of both Mexican and Southwestern American culture blended with modern streetwear. A sandy floor, vibrant plants, and colorful vases provided rich texture. Rosaries and candles added a touch of serenity.

Fashion and Ceramics students met again to work on their collaborative project. This second meeting revealed further progress and also a greater confidence in the direction and flow of the work. Students continued to test ideas and techniques, with some beginning to craft their product. It is exciting to watch these innovative designs coming together bit by bit!

In Apparel Textiles, students learned how to create tassels. Students found innovative ways to secure the yarns to braid their hanging loop and utilized a variety of objects to wind the tassels, producing a colorful end result!

In Fashion History, we studied ancient Greece. Some students modeled the historic forms of dress: ionic chiton, doric chiton, and himation. These garments were originally made of linen and silk woven lengths of cloth that was belted and pinned - fit for goddesses! We made do with cotton fabric, bias tape as belts, and safety pins we had in our stash.

Fashion and Ceramics students met for the first time this semester to work on a collaborative project. Students researched and sketched beforehand and then came together to discuss and plan the next steps of this exciting journey! The intent is to provide an experiential learning opportunity for creative students to explore partnerships outside of their own artistic specialties and develop innovative designs.

"Eco-Threads" highlights sustainable fashion and eco-conscious design practices. For this visual display, mannequins were donned with garments made with organic fibers, recycled fabrics, and vegan materials. The colors were inspired by nature and environmental responsibility - earth tones of blues, sage green, muted red, beige, and rich brown. The backdrop consists of draped greenery and a bamboo shade. Terracotta pots, small end tables, a bamboo plant, and live miniature plants serve as props in this display. Leaves are tumbled across a mossy ground.
