Roberta Smith, New York Times art critic, recently declared “ceramics is the new photography.” Until recently both ceramics and photography have been mired in the “art vs. craft” debate. Although they are entirely different mediums, photography is high tech and ceramics is high touch, both have for the most part escaped the debate and been accepted as art mediums because they are popular, culturally relevant and engaging. As diverse as their makers, ceramics have been a key element in modern design and art since the end of WWII so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are finally becoming accepted as fine art. Because of an ever increasing overload of consumer technology, people subconsciously crave “high touch” handmade cultural objects to counterbalance the desensitizing and distracting effects of technology.
