Wow! The changing conditions at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado can create an incredible phenomenon. At an elevation of 9,905 feet, Dream Lake appears to be covered with frozen waves. However, these ice ripples weren’t formed by the lake itself, but by the constant melting and freezing of snow on the lake's surface during daylight hours. Sunlight melts a tiny bit of snow on top of the ice and high winds push the water into small hills and valleys that freeze and build up through repeated windy, watery conditions. Photographer Eric gross was determined to get this picture, “Capturing this photo included multiple unsuccessful trips in snow and winds up to 40 miles per hour, which are both common at this location in winter.” Photo courtesy of Eric Gross (Life As A Nomad).
