Meet Kirkwood’s May Student of the Month, Summer Franck.
What started as a plan to complete general education courses quickly turned into a passion for a hands-on program that has helped her build confidence and real-world skills in fashion.
Summer is deeply involved on campus as Vice President of the en Vogue Society, a Director of the 2026 Kirkwood Fashion Show and Exhibition, and Editor-in-Chief of BRICOLAGE magazine. Her leadership, creativity, and dedication to her craft have made a lasting impact on the program.
Outside the classroom, she balances two jobs while continuing to design garments, often using upcycled materials and teaching herself new techniques.

Finding a place that feels like home can make all the difference.
“When I stepped on campus for orientation, everyone greeted me with a smile — it instantly felt like home. Cedar Rapids is much bigger than my hometown, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed. Kirkwood quickly became my second home. The staff here are incredible. I’ve joined several student clubs, and through that, I got to know my advisor. They honestly feel like my second family — like the parents I have while I’m five hours from home.” — Andrea Penning, Remsen, Iowa
At Kirkwood, students are welcomed with open arms and supported by staff and advisors who help them build community, connection, and confidence from day one.
