We live in a world where our kids can architect entire civilizations with a click of a button. And while that digital creativity is impressive, there is something irreplaceable about the physics of a fallen branch.
When a child builds a fort in the woods, they aren't just playing. They are:
Engineers calculating weight and balance.
Architects working with the raw materials of the earth.
Dreamers turning a pile of sticks into a castle.
If a child can build an entire virtual city on a screen but has never built a fort out of fallen branches, we've limited their imagination. Let's make sure we’re giving them enough "offline" time to get their hands dirty and their minds soaring.
To the parents, teachers, and homeschoolers here:
What was the last thing your kids built outside? 🪵 Drop a photo of their "nature architecture" in the comments.
👇 Let’s inspire each other to get them back out there!

Last week, the federal government made child care more expensive for families and riskier for home-based providers. Here's what happened and what it means:
On May 11, a new rule was finalized, eliminating four key CCDF provisions:
▪️The 7% family copayment cap (families can be charged more)
▪️Enrollment-based provider reimbursement (providers may lose pay for child absences)
▪️Prospective payment requirements (providers may only be paid after services)
▪️Grants to serve underserved children (no longer mandatory)
These changes could raise child care costs for families and increase financial risks for providers, particularly home-based educators already operating on thin margins.
At BUILD, we believe a strong early childhood system requires stable support for these educators, and states now have a greater responsibility to protect families and providers.
