When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.
We buried my Mom yesterday. The services were beautiful as my family said good bye.
When Mom went into the hospital several months ago, we took her dogs home with us.They quickly became a part of our family.
At 2AM this morning Mom’s dog, Missy, cried out. She was sleeping right beside the bed. Reaching down and petting her side, I instantly knew something was wrong. Missy passed away before I could pick her up. We suspect it must have been a heart attack.
I have no words…
My heart is…
We will miss them both. 🥹

I finished writing Mom's obituary today. I couldn't help but think of all the times she proof read my writing. I would never have finished my own book without her help. She was always there to make my words better on the page, always there until now. Oh how I miss her.

Update on Mom: After several months of pain and discomfort, Mom is no longer suffering. Thursday evening, she peacefully passed away in her sleep. Her final moments were gifted exactly as she wanted. She went quietly without pain, fear or anxiety. We knew this would be a glorious day for Mom. Like she told us several weeks ago, this was always a win/win situation for her. And yesterday, she won big time.Today she is Home. She’s been reunited with her parents and her oldest brother. She is with her Grandparents and my Dad's parents. She is with friends that she hasn't seen in ages. And most exciting, she is with the Savior who loves her more than anyone; She is with Jesus.
Dad, and the rest of us will greatly miss her. Our lives will never be the same without her. And while we will hurt in her absence, we will also celebrate. Because for her, pain is a distant memory, disappointment and sadness is a thing of the past. I imagine that she might miss us while we linger to join her, but I also imagine that the revelation of the glory that waits for us beyond this earthly struggle, brings a beautiful smile to her lips. She is home and one day we will be too. I can hardly wait for that wonderful day when I will see her again. Until then, I will miss you Mama.

Funeral services are planned for Thursday, March 21st. Details are available at https://www.west-hurttfuneralhome.com/

Elderine would have wanted donations in lieu of flowers to be made to Omega Graduate School, 500 Oxford Drive, Dayton,TN 37321 (https://ogs.edu/give/).

Update on Mom: My heart is broken. I remember, as I child, my mom would stay up, way into the night, holding my hand as I struggled to breathe. My asthma would hit hard every time we visited my grandparents in Oklahoma. Mom would stay up with me every night, praying and doing everything in her power to bring peace to my frightened little body. Most nights required an emergency room visit and a shot of steroids to give relief. I never understood the extent of my mom's feelings of helplessness until now.
As I write this, I'm holding mom's hand and watching her struggle to take each and every breath. There is nothing I can do but hold her hand and pray. I feel so utterly helpless. Oh what I would give to take her place. It's so heart wrenching to watch her suffer.
The Hospice nurse had prepared us for her likely passing yesterday evening. We called friends and family to give them the opportunity to say goodbye. Mom could barely speak, but the one thing we could understand between her slurred words was: I want to go home. I'm ready to go home.
It's been almost 20 hours and Mom is still with us.
The morphine is controlling the unbearable pain she experiences. But now, watching her struggle for every breath, I simply desire peace for her. She is ready to go home.
My prayers for her have shifted from praying for a miracle, to simply asking for peace and comfort; an escape from her suffering.
Please understand, I will greatly miss my Mom, but my greatest desire, now, is that she find peace from this suffering.
The lyrics from one of the songs my brother and I wrote many years ago, lingers in my thoughts.
“I hope it won't be too long, till Heaven.”

Update on Mom: I wish I could tell you that Mom is doing ok, but the cancer continues to spread and Mom is suffering. There are more and more surfaces tumors that have spread across the left side of her body. Mom is no longer getting out of the bed. The nurses agreed that it is no longer safe for her to stand. She just doesn't have the strength to balance herself anymore. She is also struggling with talking. Her voice is now so weak it is challenging to understand what she is trying to say and it's practically impossible now for her to hold a phone conversation. She doesn't have much of an appetite and only nibbles on food, sometimes only a bite or two. It is unusual for her to eat any more than 20% of her small meals. She is having pain in her back, hips and on her left side where her surface tumors are. They have had to steadily increase her morphine doses to try and control her pain. The heavier doses of pain meds keep her constantly drowsy. She hates the feeling of being drugged, but the pain is reaching levels that causes her labored breathing and the heavier morphine doses and anxiety meds are the only thing that seems to make a difference. When we visit, time is mostly spent sitting by her bed and holding her hands. The drugs and the disease are taking their toll on her ability to think and understand. She doesn't seem to be able to accurately understand what is going on. A couple of days ago she was convinced that the morphine was responsible for her needing to be on oxygen. This was just not true. She has also been dealing with anxiety. We later discovered that Mom had misunderstood the nurse, thinking she only had 4 days left to live. This again was just not accurate. The nurse never discussed anything remotely on the subject.
It's difficult to watch Mom endure this, but the family continues to trust that God is in control. We are still praying for her miracle and waiting for God.
God continues to bless financially. We have already invested $7000 in Mom's 24 hour care. The home care nurses that have been taking care of Mom night and day are named Mercy and Agnes. They have been such a blessing and a God send. Mercy and Agnes continuously pray with Mom and are so attentive to her needs and comfort.
Thank you for your generosity in donations and prayers. I can't express how much your love and concern for Elderine has made such a difference for our family. We appreciate each and every one of you.

Update on Mom: She has good days and exhausting days. Since I got sick last Tuesday, I haven't gotten to see Mom like I want, but I have been checking on her by phone every day. Some days she seems good, enjoying her meals and her visitors. Other days she seems exhausted and barely able to stay awake. God continues to bless us with each new day as she enjoys being in her own home. The cancer is visibly spreading, but Mom remains in good spirits. Today we watched a video of students and teachers from Masters Academy expressing their love and gratitude for the role my Mom has played in their lives. It was such a beautiful gift. She was so happy to see the numerous personal messages.
We do have a specific request. Mom has been experiencing anxiety and unexpected fear especially in the evenings. Please keep her in prayer as the day concludes. Prayers against fear and anxiety, prayers for a pain free and restful nights sleep, prayers for a better tomorrow… your prayers make such a huge difference.
As many of you may have noticed, our family started a GoFundMe campaign to ask for financial assistance specifically with Mom's 24 hour nursing care. Today, marks two complete weeks of in home care. At $250 dollars a day it has already cost $3500. I don't share this to pressure anyone into contributing, I just wanted to thank the many of you who have been able to bless us with financial gifts. We can't even begin to express our gratitude for your generosity. Even the smallest of donations have made a difference and we treasure each of you.
Please continue to pray for Elderine and our family.

Update on Elderine, AKA Mom: She has been in the inpatient Hospice Care facility for several days now. Although the cancer is rapidly spreading, they are managing the pain and she remains in good spirits. Her grandkids came in from New Mexico and spent most of the day with her yesterday. And most of her siblings visited Friday while others will be there today. Family that can't make the trip are chatting by phone and we are sharing Facebook messages, text and video messages with her between visits. She is surrounded by people that love her. Thank you all.
She is also surrounded in constant prayer 🙏. We have received so many responses of continued prayers for her and the family. God continues to do small things to remind me that He is in complete control.
We were at their house yesterday getting it ready for her to come home. They plan to release her to come home as early as Tuesday. Friends and family were praying at the house and believing that God can do the impossible. Moments after our collective Amen, we heard a knock at the door. Answering the door, I initially assumed the two complete strangers were trying to sell us something, but instead they introduced themselves and asked if they could be praying for us in any way. I stepped outside and we prayed again. In the midst of the storm we are continuing to praise God. Mom tells everyone who visits… she is in a win/win situation. If God chooses to heal her she wins, if He takes her to her eternal home she also wins.
We are praying for a miracle. We are asking God for a 100% restoration of Elderine’s body. Although the doctors have lost hope, our hope lies with the Almighty Healer. We are waiting to see what God will do. And no matter the outcome, we will praise Him. God is good.
Thank you for your continued prayers 🙏
