UNI College of Education

UNI College of Education The UNI College of Education has a legacy of preparing quality educators and more dating back to 1876. They learn from faculty who lead their disciplines.

The University of Northern Iowa is proud to be a leader in preK-12 education in Iowa, including formal and nonformal education. Our undergraduate and graduate students prepare for careers ranging from early childhood, elementary, middle level, literacy and special education teachers to school administrators, nonprofit professionals, school psychologists, teacher librarians, recreation therapists,

tourism event planners, campus and community parks and recreation leaders, higher education student affairs specialists and more. Our teaching majors are immersed early and often in professional settings. Education majors have a variety of field experiences in rural, suburban, urban or international school settings. Students in our recreation, tourism and nonprofit leadership program intern in community and nonprofit organizations, agencies and centers. The College of Education offers the largest undergraduate major at UNI -- elementary education -- and anchors UNI Teacher Education, the largest program in Iowa and one of the largest in public universities in the country. In addition to its specific teaching degrees, its faculty and staff also oversee the majority of field experiences and the path to licensure for all teaching majors across four colleges. A full slate of graduate education programs includes nationally recognized master's and online programs and a doctorate in education (EdD). The University of Northern Iowa College of Education values leadership and excellence in the preparation of future professionals, encouraging leadership and innovation in professional practice and strong collaborative relationships with the professionals and communities we serve.

The rain didn't stop the fun at last Saturday's UNI Day at the Cedar Falls Farmers Market, hosted by University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association. Kids got to play with toys from the Iowa Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education -- spinning tops, working with balancing blocks and more (adding some fun to STEM education)!

The welcome mat was out this week all over campus--including our Learning, Leadership and Community department. Students, faculty and staff grabbed some healthy goodies (trail mix or papaya, anyone?) and had some fun, like sharing their putting skills and "getting framed" for their own video game. All in support of disciplines ranging from recreation to school psych to esports admin & coaching! Enjoy the year!

For our new teachers, first day of school has double-meaning! The concept didn't really go away, it's just changed! Just ask Miah P. -- new grad, new alum and now a first-year teacher in the Iowa City Community School District. Miah first distinguished herself when chosen as our final Sally Gearhart Strottman Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education awardee for her four years at UNI, and we fully expect great things to come as she begins this next chapter! Best wishes to Miah and all her kiddos at Weber Elementary! https://bit.ly/Miah-P Iowa City Community School District

For Miah Phalen, this back-to-school season is special. For the first time in many years, she’s not starting a new academic year as a student. This year, she’s the teacher, leading her own classroom at Weber Elementary School in Iowa City. “I got my roster to look at my kids and see their pict...
