North Cedar School goes to China

CK visited the North Cedar 4th grade class this Tuesday and held a question and answer session for the students. The students had several questions regarding food, geography, animals, plants/flowers, technology, language, Chinese names, the Forbidden City and education. In China, students attend school for 9 hours (7am-4pm) 5 days a week and roughly spend another 3 hours on homework. CK also talked about the Forbidden City. It took 16 years to build and is the size of 135 football fields. It is now a museum. No one lived there but the emperor and his family. Servants and guards also used to reside in the Forbidden City and no one was allowed to go there unless they were invited by the Emperor. The Emperor was the decision maker for the whole country.

Last Tuesday in Mrs. Brodahl's class, Kong Chen (CK as the students address him), a doctoral student at UNI who grew up in China, brought in "sweet stuffed dumplings." They are made of glutinous rice flour, black sesame, glutose, and peanut butter. It is a traditional Chinese food consumed on the fifteenth day (Feb 24th) of the Chinese New Year holiday. He also spoke about the Chinese festivals and then created name tags for all of the students with their English names and then their names in Chinese.

North cedar students joined Dr. Davis at West Lake. The lady in the picture asked to practice English with him. He consented and asked her to hold the student quilt for photo.

West Lake, Hangzhou, is one of most attractive tourist destinations in China. Legend is when lake gets low, golden bull revealed, becomes angry, causes rain to refill lake. 2000 years ago, farmers drained lake to create more rain. Bull enraged, lake has never been empty since.
