Have you met the Dean of your college yet?🤔

Jean Boreen is the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Southern Utah University. Dr. Boreen is a strong advocate for the humanities and social sciences and is dedicated to helping students understand why a degree from a department in HSS is an excellent foundation for their future.

Dean Boreen loves to interact with students and currently teaches the Young Adult Literature methods course for the English Education program. As a teacher, Dean Boreen values experiential learning and uses that routinely in her course as she asks future teachers to analyze and discuss the approaches she uses in the classroom. Dean Boreen can also sing any Emily Dickinson poem to song “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”

Dean Boreen’s scholarship has focused primarily on the mentoring of beginning teachers, both during the student teaching experience and in the first three years of teaching. She has co-authored several books and articles on this topic and offers her mentoring service to faculty who are new to SUU. Dr. Boreen also has a deep knowledge of young adult literature and has authored several articles on its use in secondary classrooms. If you need a recommendation for a great book for yourself or a younger sibling or friend, Dr. B has it.

Boreen earned a BA in English and an MA in English (Literature) from Iowa State University. She earned a PhD in English Education from The University of Iowa. She also grew up in Iowa, which makes her an expert on the state, whether you want to know about riding your bike across Iowa on RAGBRAI (The (Des Moines) Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) or where the best corn on the cob can be found.

Come meet the BEST Dean on campus February 19th during our semesterly Donuts with the Dean event!🍩🤗She cannot wait to see you there😁

Meet Paige, a fellow HSS student who recently traveled to present at a conference!😄

“Hi! My name is Paige Iverson and this past fall I traveled to Tampa, Florida to speak on a panel at the American Anthropological Association Conference about “DEI Discontinued: Anthropological Praxis in Changing Academic and Legal Landscapes” along with the professors of SUU’s Anthropology Department and few others from Universities around the country.

This was a great opportunity for me to advocate on a topic I am passionate about and build connections with my future peers.

Part of what made my trip to Florida possible was support from SUU’s Anthropology Club and financial help from the HSS Student Conference Funding and CONNECT Grant from the Gerald R. Sherratt Library. These are very helpful resources available to students and I highly recommend using them to help further your undergrad education.”

YOU🫵 could present at a conference too😁apply for the HSS Student Conference and Research fund and we will help make it possible: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBhq8oJ_klwZGYBVdgdAVAQnFlGxChUDkuLpvkuWeudyE44g/viewform
