Sometimes one sentence at the right time can keep you going.

This piece of advice came after a particularly hard semester of dealing with grief of a friend. I had gotten a grade that I was less than happy with, and I was worried that this grade would affect my chances of going to law school.
My professor, E. Jay Overson, told me “your failures are only motivation to do better in the future”

He helped me see that one bad grade wasn’t going to be the end of my career. I really felt loved and supported in that moment and it gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.

Home away from home.

“I didn’t move to another country with the expectation of what studying abroad means for many people. I arrived with a lot of fears and sadness for leaving behind everything that, to me, meant happiness.

I grew up believing I would never find a place that feels like home, and that everywhere I went, I would always feel like I didn’t fully belong. However, against all odds, Cedar City changed that perspective.

The moment I got here, the people, the streets, and the university welcomed me with open arms, offering a hand with even the smallest things. I realized that for a place to be called home, you don’t need to have been born there, because the sense of familiarity SUU has given me is something I haven’t found anywhere else.”

Some universities have good campuses, but very few make adventure feel like part of student life.

“What I love most about SUU is that it truly promotes outdoor recreation, creating a culture where exploring nature and connecting with the outdoors become a core part of the college experience.
My first real encounter with nature was in Zion. Ever since then, I haven’t stopped wanting to discover new trails, places, and experiences. It completely transformed outdoor recreation into a major pillar of my life here.
What makes it special isn’t just the activities, but the feeling of being outside. In nature, you feel free. You disconnect from stress, and it feels like you are enjoying life at its peak. Some of my favorite memories have come from exploring the outdoors with friends and challenging myself physically and mentally.
To me, it’s more than a hobby. It helps me grow as a person, clear my mind, and build experiences I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

That’s why it matters, the outdoors here doesn’t just give you places to go, it gives you a way to come back to yourself. That’s why so many of our best SUU memories start with a simple, “Want to go?”
