Utah Lyceum

Utah Lyceum We are a group of philosophers from SUU who are engaged in the project of introducing critical reasoning and philosophy to pre-college students.

We consider a philosophical education too important to wait until adulthood, and to that end we run a summer camp aimed at introducing philosophy and logic to Utah youth. The idea is to serve both the greater Cedar City and University communities by providing interested area youth with an exposure to formal critical reasoning skills and a philosophical education. The summer camp is free to any int

erested local students (age 14 and up), and will take place for five days. As this year's will be the inaugural camp, we have to limit enrollment to about 15 students, but we hope to expand in future years. Our primary aim in offering this program is to introduce local youth to careful critical reasoning and philosophy at the pre-college age. We are a sister program of the Illinois Lyceum, the West Michigan Philosophy Lyceum, and the Iowa Lyceum and will utilize the summer camps both as a way to spread philosophical discourse to younger students, to increase readiness for the rigors of college, and most importantly clarify reasoning. We would like to thank the Southern Utah University College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Office of the Provost, and the Grace A. Tanner Center for their generous support. We would not be able to do this without them.

Hi there folks! We are two weeks away from this year’s Lyceum, and we are still accepting applications! Please help spread the word!

At the Utah Lyceum, we are interested in helping students think critically - that means we help students learn how to think, not tell them what to think.

This year we'll be discussing various views of the good life and happiness. And since it's all on zoom, we welcome students from anywhere!

After significant reflection, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Lyceum.

We share in your disappointment, but think this is the best course of action given the circumstances. We will reach out directly to those of you who have already registered, and share our thanks for your interest.

Please look for us next summer, and stay safe.

Hi there!
As I’m sure you know, Covid-19 has thrown a number of wrenches into everyone’s plans. We are monitoring the situation, and hope that the precautions taken over the next month or so will stem the spread of the virus.

Since the doesn’t happen until June, we are still planning to hold it as scheduled.

The situation is of course fluid and subject to change, and we will keep you posted should anything change. The health and safety of everyone is our primary concern.

Stay tuned.
