Just wanted to take a few moments to "humble brag" on my super-intelligent VEX kiddos! In the span of 4 meetings, they have constructed simple demo robots using the new V5 hardware and --- much to my amazement --- they were able to get their robots up-and-running with wireless driver control within about 30 minutes this past Tuesday....keep in mind that the V5 technology is a completely new interface to our VEX program this year and Tuesday was the first time they had ever worked with the "techy" side of the V5 system! I'm looking forward to watching their progress in building and programming their competition robots in the upcoming weeks!

VEX game elements for the 2019-2020 Tower Takeover challenge have arrived at WHMS! The kiddos have worked hard to get the field ready.... now we just need robots 😉

The newest members of the WHMS VEX team were selected and they have already started working on next year's game challenge! Our 2019-2020 VEX teams are:

4431A: Megan Puckett (returnee); Lindy Barnes (1st year) & Michelle Zheng (1st year)

4431B: Jackson Riddle (returnee); Noah Bennett (1st year); Preston Meredith (1st year) & Zachary Howard (1st year).

Congratulations to these kiddos!

We finally received our VEX V5 goodies on the last day of school! We'd like to thank interim principal, Phillip Pike, for supporting our program and finding the necessary funds to make this electronics upgrade a reality!

The 2019 Middle School VEX Robotics Summer Camp is now scheduled! Camp dates are June 5-7, and will run from 8:30am-3:00pm each day. The camp is open to all interested students (you do not have to be involved in VEX at WHMS) and cost for attendance is $60/student, which includes daily lunch and a camp t-shirt. Students will work with engineering notebooks, simple machines, design process and programming principles. Printable registration forms are available at the West Hardin homepage under the 'Camps/Forms' tab. West Hardin students should return completed forms and payment to Coach David Robbins at WHMS. Online registration will also soon be available through VEX Robot Events (robotevents.com). Contact Jason Neagle at the Hardin County Schools EC3, or David Robbins at WHMS for more details.

As we close out the 2018-2019 season, our VEX program is already looking forward to 2019-2020! Next season should be doubly exciting for West Hardin as we tackle the 2019-2020 VEX VRC game, "Tower Takeover" AND transition to the new VEX V5 system! Hopefully the "Tower Takeover" challenge will not have as much robot-to-robot 'trench warfare' as the "Turning Point" challenge, which should allow robot design and driving skill to shine....we also really like the West Hardin-inspired purple game cubes in "Tower Takeover" 😉

Although Team 4431A's first ever appearance at the VEX World Championship was hampered by ongoing tech issues with their robot during their qualifying matches, Briley Robbins, Megan Puckett, and Gracie Tilley had a great overall experience in Louisville, KY, last week! These young ladies represented their school proudly, and had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet fellow VEX competitors from all around the globe! They also had the privilege of meeting a few VIP's as well, including KY Lieutenant Governor, Jenean M. Hampton, and United States Congressman, John Yarmuth (KY-3rd Dist)! The Amazing Spiderman even made an appearance at VEX Worlds 2019! Congratulations on a memorable and historic 2018-2019 VEX season, girls!

It appears that we closed the book on the 2018-2019 WHMS VEX season a little too soon! Earlier this week, Team 4431A (Briley Robbins, Gracie Tilley & Megan Puckett) received a last minute invite to the 2019 VEX Robotics World Championship in late April! Although team 4431B has qualified for the VEX World Championship on two prior occasions (2016, 2017), this is the first ever appearance at VEX Worlds for Team 4431A! Team 4431A would like to thank WHMS interim principal, Phillip Pike, and WHMS bookkeeper, Dayna Waddell, for getting the financial logistics worked out on such short notice. It's a tremendous blessing to have a staff and administration that fully supports our VEX program! Be sure to periodically check our page for more updates in the near future. Congratulations 4431A, and Good Luck at VEX Worlds 2019!

The WHMS VEX robotics program concluded their 2018-2019 season with another strong showing at the Kentucky Middle School VEX State Championship. Team 4431A (L-R: Megan Puckett, Briley Robbins & Gracie Tilley) took home the tournament Runner-Up trophy at the competition, while Team 4431B (Jonathan Reilly, Nathan Crawford & Jackson Riddle) advanced all the way to the tournament semifinals! Team 4431B also finished the Skills Challenge component of the state competition in 2nd place, while Team 4431A finished 5th in the Skills Challenge. Team 4431B finishes the 2019 season with the #3 overall Skills ranking for all middle schools in Kentucky, while Team 4431A finishes #7 in the final state rankings. This is the 3rd consecutive year that the WHMS VEX program has brought home a trophy from the state championship! Great Job, Kiddos!
