We're back at it, didn't win the August run but that's no reason to give up. To make things more interesting a page has been created for the purpose of discussing the martial arts' role in the public school system. Stanislaus Union School District is intent on providing martial arts instruction for our "at risk" students. Your vote would be greatly appreciated.

Parent Workshop - The Ultimate Guide To Effective and Caring Discipline - Part 1

Here's the description:
Effective parenting is based on the ultimate outcome of developing a healthy (physically and mentally) human who is independent and has incredible skills for success in their future. In the short term, parents often struggle with how to manage discipline and build their kids self esteem. Do I Yell at my child if they do something wrong? If I yell does that damage their self esteem or does it create a child that has no boundaries and thinks they’re entitled? Parents get tons of conflicting advice from their parents, from pop psychologists (often with no background regarding children), from books (often not research based) and more. It's tough to get sorted out...

Here is the opening paragraph:

The lyrics are soaring and defiant: “And I’ll rise up. I’ll rise like the day! I’ll rise up. I’ll rise unafraid!”

Andra Day’s Grammy-nominated 2016 hit ‘Rise Up’ has been featured in television shows and commercials — it was played on the campaign trail by Hillary Clinton and performed at the inauguration of President Joe Biden — but in a Tampa hotel room in February, the song had an audience of just one.

Sarah Thomas had deliberately loaded it onto her playlist and she became emotional. “You’re broken down and tired of living life on a merry-go-round,” Day sings, “But I promise we’ll take the world to its feet and move mountains.”

“It just impacted me so strongly that morning,” the 47-year-old told CNN. “Every word of that song has meaning to my journey.”

An hour later, Thomas left the hotel and went to the Super Bowl. That night, she was sharing the stage with Tom Brady, the Lombardi Trophy and over 100 million people watching worldwide.

And another glass ceiling had been shattered.

Her story is pretty cool but…
I love these kind of stories because it reminds me of when parents come in to KarateBuilt Martial Arts with a son and daughter and we ask “OK so the lessons are for both of the kids?” and they say “Oh no! Only for my son.” A little bit of Gender Bias is alive and well even with really meaning parents!
If you’ve ever been kicked by a girl, you know martial arts (and all sports) is for them too! There are SO MANY success stories at our school about young girls who become strong women who succeed that I wanted to share another one!

So I was watching the U.S. Open and Learning Lessons about Martial Arts...

I am not very good (actually I am really BAD) at tennis. The last time my buddy Joe asked me to play tennis I broke his racquet... that's why it was the last time. BUT this is a KARATE lesson so I guess it's OK...

..But anyway I wanted to watch the U.S. Open today because I like to see monumental events in sports and it's pretty exciting to see Serena Williams in the finals. Not because I like Serene in particular - in fact, I don't think I have ever watched her - but it's just intriguing to see an all-time great reach an all-time record. I figured after reaching the finals three previous times (2 Wimbledon and the last U.S. Open) and she'd probably win, right?

The first "karate" lesson was Perseverance...

.. we speak of this in martial arts all the time but sometimes this is "just a word". To me, it's what's going on mentally that matters more than what you do. Serena was down 5 games to one and down 40 to 15 in the 2nd set. That's called Championship Point for her opponent - Bianca Andreescu (a 19 year old Canadian). For you that don't know tennis, that means that Serena would have to win the next point, and the game and every game thereafter to have a chance. She won the next point and got the score to 5 games to 5! BUT what I imagined at that point (down 5 to 1) - for most people - would be that it would be much easier to just give up. The odds of getting even the games at 5-5 are very slim. She wasn't playing well. Just imagine in your mind how strong you have to be to keep going on!

That was amazing to watch!

In the end, she didn't win and Bianca Andreescu did... so my next thought was...

The more important lesson - to me - was grace in losing...

Serena Williams is an internationally known superstar and widely considered the best of all time. BUT she needs one more major tennis win to match the all-time record of Margaret Court of 24 major championship wins to "own" the record. This was undeniably important to her for many reasons you can read about beyond what I am writing about here so I imagine the pain of losing (and being in those aforementioned 3 finals and losing) must have been painful - can you imagine that for a second? She also knew she hadn't played up to her abilities (she'd crushed the last 3 more highly seeded players in the prior matches) and knew she didn't have a good match... again can you imagine the disappointment?

Yet when she was on the stage and interviewed, in my view, she was pleasant, professional, complementary and exceedingly genuine and nice to her opponent and to the crowd and officials.

This seems to be the opposite of what I see recently - like the kid who didn't like the referee's call in a high school football game and head-butted him... there are lots of examples... it's so bad one youth soccer referee is publishing a page showing bad parent behavior. In karate we hope to do this better!

I don't know or follow tennis well enough to know if Serena Williams is a great example or other behavior or if she should be a role model - and I don't really care! I just like to see lessons to apply to what we do in martial arts to what is happening elsewhere. It does kinda make me a fan of Serena Williams though!

Martial Arts At KarateBuilt Martial Arts is Perfect for Kids With Autism or Any Special Need!
Autism is defined as:
a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior.
At KarateBuilt Martial Arts the instructors are trained to work with kids with special needs and have years of experience. Our certified instructors see more kids in a week than most elementary school teachers see in a career (albeit for shorter times) so they get to work with a wide variety of kids.
In addition, we get a higher percentage of the typical population seeking out karate as a way to work with kids with autism (and kids with ADHD, OCD, ODD, and many other childhood issues). Therefore our instructors get a lot of experience working with a huge range of ability levels.
The most important piece is the specific training.
My initial work on my Ph.D. research was based on the benefits of martial arts for kids with autism. I was motivated in this area because my son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. Yet because I believed in martial arts so much (after all I owned the school) I started him in our Leadership program. Now remember you have to stand up and express yourself in the Leadership program - that's what we're teaching - and even when he was 4 he couldn't speak properly. When he started his first words were probably a karate Kihap (that's a yell if you didn't know)!
Let me cut to the end of the story... because of this (and also all the great teachers and therapists he had - but don't get me wrong a LOT was due to what we did in the karate school) he is not only a top student, but one of the leaders of his football and track teams. He's an instructor in the martial arts school and is working now on applying for the United States Naval Academy (acceptance rate of only 8%).
This is because the instructors (not me - I always had him work with other instructors because I wanted him to learn from other people) are trained to push the students to the maximum they can handle at any given time. At every moment. For some students that may be just a little bit. For others it's a lot....
The instructors here at our school do get me as a resource and we do specific training and work on kids with special needs. Our staff knows about the needs and skills of kids with autism (ADHD/etc.) and if they occasionally get stuck, they get with me and I help them work through it. Some students need private training for a while till they can work with the group - so we do that... some need other special requirements and our staff can handle it!
So that's the short version of how we work with kids with autism and other special needs... contact us if you need more information at any time!

Hey I was just watching video feed from the Cave Creek KarateBuilt School as I do sometimes with the instructors teaching class and it just struck me for the 100th time... or more...

Our Instructors are the best qualified - in any activity - on the planet!

(FYI - some of my friends here are not martial arts people so bear with me for you who I am repeating what you know - not that you'd read this - it's Facebook so most people ignore everything right?)

I am sorry if that sounds outlandish to say but it is true! (and I don't necessarily mean ours are better than yours, but just that I was really proud of our guys)...

Before I explain, I don't know if you know how poorly and sometimes dangerously trained - or background checked - some people are before they work with you (or your children). Many people who work with kids:

**Are not background checked by third party independent companies
**Are not CPR certified (important in case of emergencies)
**Have little to no supervised instruction - often they are just practitioners of the sport (like they played football or played baseball. In martial arts they might be a black belt).
**They often haven't had any formal training in how to teach.
It seems obvious (and critical) that at LEAST these four things are prerequisites to be an instructor at anything but sadly it's so true that in a vast majority of cases - especially with kids - this seems to be the situation. And even more unfortunately in my favorite field - martial arts - it's even more prevalent.

The martial arts organization our KarateBuilt schools license curriculum from - the ATA - requires background checks... but we have been background checking and vetting our instructors before they even required it (In fact, they used the company we found for their initial system of background checking)!

In addition to the minimum CPR certification we require, over 300+ hours of formal supervised live instruction, hours and hours of classroom work and even after that the KarateBuilt Schools repeat that training again and again as long as they are active instructors in our school (plus more stuff to add on the list)...

In addition to all that the curriculum and instruction and class planners have been laid out for the past 20 years by the team here from beginner - through 7th degree Black Belt. We know and plan our teaching so far in advance the instructors know EXACTLY what they are doing and can train on what to teach with me so they continue to be the best.

It's really unusual to have these kind of standards in any field!

So anyway, that was truly my thought of the day - I am proud of the instructors at the school! Thanks Master Sanborn, Mr. Kreskow, Mr. Moody, Mr. Cicinelli, Ms. Carson and the rest of the team!
